Problems saving changes on FH - advice, please
Today my computer carried out a de-frag and other operations. Now I keep getting this message:
"Part of the save process failed - Please click Retry.
If this problem recurs, you may need to consider if any software running in the background
(i.e. backup software) may be responsible, and may need to be re-configured."
I am not very conversant with software problems etc and wonder if anyone had some advice for me to resolve this problem.

A defrag would normally be OK, but "other" sounds ominous. I take it the "Part of the save process failed - Please click Retry" refers to FH. I trust you did a backup before your cleanup, ideally an image copy of your operating system too. If you can add a few more details others may have come accross this problem before and have some ideas.

Thanks for your reply, Jim.
Yes, whenever I have tried to add information to my Family Historian tree today I get the error message.
I'm afraid I'm not at all computer savvy and apart from the de-frag I'm not sure what else was changed. I took a GEDCOM back-up yesterday. All my information seems intact, but I can't add anything new. I assume some setting somewhere is stopping me making any changes.

If I try to close the first error message, this one appears:
"An error has occurred. Family Historian could not save to file J:\My Documents (New)\Family Historian Projects\A* full tree\A* full tree.fh_data\A* full tree.ged
However a copy of your changes has been saved to a new file, J:\My Documents (New)\Family Historian Projects\A* full tree\A* full tree.fh_data\~fhE69C.tmp"

Another problem that I'm experiencing is that all my Word documents are opening in "read-only" format.
Re: Problems saving changes on FH - advice, please
Your My Documents Disk Drive location "J:\My Documents (New)\" is somewhat unusual. Have you moved your My Documents Folder to a different Disk Drive recently; and/or have you by any chance copied your files to this new location using a CD/DVD Drive?

I have a Mirror drive and save most of my work to this J drive. I don't use the C drive so much.
I always seem to see My Documents (New), for some reason.

It looks as if either the properties of either some/all of the Files on that Drive have been set to 'Read-only' or the Drive/Folder itself has become set to store all files as 'Read-only'.
- You probably need to check if all of your Document files have been affected in the same way, i.e. can you open, edit and save any files at all?
- Also try checking the Properties of one of your files, i.e. Right Click on a File, Select 'Properties' from the pop-up menu, at the bottom of the General Tab you should see an entry which says Attribitutes: If the 'Read-only' box is ticked try un-ticking it - If the tick then disappears Click on 'Apply' and check if you can then edit and save that file. If this doesn't work there's a deeper problem. If it does, then the problem becomes how many files have been affected and need to be changed back from Read-only.

quick reply, what Mervyn says sounds quite possible, One gets this by default on the root of a drive now with Windows 7. If that is the problem, you should be able to add edit for a folder and sub folders.

You said it was a mirrored drive. It is also possible that the RAID has dropped out of sync without you realising it. This is very possible if Windows is managing the RAID
Re: Problems saving changes on FH - advice, please
I've discovered that the problem is across my whole computer system. All files/folders come up with "read only".
I have followed advice from various sources and, for example, I went into My Documents, then went into Oganize then Properties and un-checked the Read Only attribute box and clicked OK. My computer then seems to run and make the change. However, when at the end of the operation I look again and nothing has changed. I don't seem to be able to remove the Read Only instruction.
John - I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by RAID.

Re: Problems saving changes on FH - advice, please
Although I'm sure people here are willing to help, this sounds like a Windows/ "File control" problem and not FH. You might want to cast your net wider regarding a forum for an answer, make sure you give as much info as possible. Have you no family or local friend who might be able to help hands on.

Thanks, Jim. I realise that now. I first noticed the problem with Family Historian.
I have a computer-buff friend coming to see me later today so I hope he can solve it.
Thank you all for your help.
