Amendment of e.g. Assessments

Post by bungleberry » 17 Jul 2015 08:14

I have recently come back to FH after a long period when I didn't do anything. There are some thousands of entries in my FH v5 database. Like Pedro (on a different thread) I am now unhappy about some of the fields I entered way back.

Purely as an example, I would no longer consider what was entered on censuses as 'Secondary evidence'. It's not the end of the world, but it would be good to put them right. So is there a way of doing a bulk amendment - in this case identifying all my census citations and changing their assessments en masse?

A plug-in? Oh dear. Please regard my skill at pc usage as merely 'Noddy' level.

Thank you.

Despite your reservation regarding plug-ins it is probably the only option for bulk editing. There is a plug-in available in the store which should help.

David's suggestion is useful, but it only operates on one Source at a time, and will change all its Citations whether related to a Census Event or not.

Give me a day or so, and I will post a Plugin to make the bulk changes you require.

Attached is the Modify Census Citation Assessments Plugin version 1.0 dated 17 July 2015.
Just left-click on the link to install it into FH.

I advise you take a File > Backup/Restore > Small Backup (Gedcom Only) before running this Plugin.

Use Tools > Plugins select the Plugin and click Run to perform the following actions:
  • Search Individual and Family records for Census Events
  • Search each Census Event for any Source Citations
  • For these Citations ensure each Assessment is Primary evidence
  • Update final Result Set to indicate where the changes were made
Check the changes are OK, and if anything is unsatisfactory use Edit > Undo Plugin Updates before closing FH.

Be aware that every Source Citation Assessment on every Census Event will be changed to Primary evidence, so if this is not what you want, do not run the Plugin. May be you only want Sources that reference Census Documents to be changed. In which case, how can they be identified? Is Census Record Type = Census or does the Title contain the word Census?

Let me know if there are any problems with using this Plugin.
