I've just switched to FH version 6.0.4 (running on Windows 7 Home Premium, fully up to date) after some years with FTM and a few months with Legacy 8.0. I won't go into the reasons for changing - I'm sure they are familiar!

I've learned how to drive FH6, with one exception. Searching the Forum hasn't revealed the answer (no doubt it's there somewhere). Advice would be appreciated.

Much of my data gathering is with a register or similar from a particular town/village. The quick check method I have used in the past is to display the list of names associated with that town - which FTM and Legacy will both do. With FH6 I can get a list of places, which shows a count of the number of names associated, but will not list those names.

How do I produce an alphabetical list of names against a place?

Keith,

One way is:

1. Go to the Places Tab
2. Select your Place, then from the Menu at the top of the Application Window Select View/Record Links
3. On the screen which appears there is a Drop Down List where you can select the Record Type you wanted and the List for Individuals can be sorted alphabetically by clicking the Records Column
4. The Icon at the bottom left also enables you to add to/create a Named List.

Thank you for the answer.

I'm doing something wrong, because I can't see a "Places" tab. At the top of the screen I have "File - Edit - View - Add - Publish - Tools - Internet - Windows - Help", and under that "Save - Home - Focus - Media - Diagrams - Query - Map - Property Box - Find Record - Move Up - Move Down - Automatic source citations."

Under that is the Focus window on the left, and the Property box on the right. and then at the bottom "For Help press F1" and the count of individuals and families in my file. There is no icon at the bottom left to create a named list. This is Family Historian version 6.0.4.

If I select "View" - "Record Lists" - "Places" I get a list of places with the count of entries for each. The Property box disappears, although I can get it back by right-clicking a place name and clicking "Properties", but there is no option there for Record Type and no way that I've found (so far) of producing a list of people connected with a place.

At the moment, I'm reduced to exporting the file to Legacy, listing the individuals by place there, and then switching to FH6 to add information, but there has to be a better way!

Keith, Mervyn forgot to mention you need to select the Records Window by clicking the left-hand Navigation bar icon that looks like a few documents, below the magnifying glass Focus Window icon.

To make sure that all the record type tabs are displayed use Tools > Preferences > Records Window and set all the Record Type Display Options to Always show.

As a newcomer may I suggest you work through how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers where the above advice is highlighted along with many other topics.

Thank you! That worked with no further ado.

I can't keep that window open and go off and add data, but that's a minor niggle that I can cope with.

I'm still "climbing the mountain" of how to drive FH6, after some years of fluency with FTM (until the "non-existent" memory leak bit me) and a few months with Legacy 8. I'll have a careful browse of the Instructions now that I've got my data in and working.

Sorry about missing the 'Select Records' Window step.

For editing individuals:

When you get to the Records List pop-up, simply 'right click' on the record you want to edit and select "Go To" which will pop-up the Individual Record window without leaving Places. Unfortunately you do have to call up the records links again to pick another record, unless you create a Named List which you can work from and then delete when you finish, if you don't need it anymore.

Thank you, Mervyn. I'm over 90% of the way to where I wanted to be, so I'm happy. I'll look into setting up a Named List.
Most of the time, the list is used to see who I don't have and who therefore needs to be added to the database.

I just came up with a workaround which may supersede this: I copied the .GED file to my iPad and opened it in Heredis, then did a "list by places" in that. So I can look at the iPad to see who I have/don't have, and then enter them immediately using FH6.

You are lucky that Heredis accepts the FH UTF-16 encoded Unicode GEDCOM file, as most products do not.

In general, I advise you use the Export Gedcom File Plugin to transfer GEDCOM & Media from FH to another product. It has special settings for many popular products including Heredis.

There are often many ways of getting a result in FH. For your situation I use a Custom Query based on All Facts but includes their places and queries what place you want, lots of other place info too, and sort on whichever column you want. AND. you can keep the query open while you do other things OR just go direct by clicking on any none greyed column to bring up the required item, be it source, person, place, fact.

To use it just download the attached and run it (or create your own custom query from scratch), FH should then install it, adjust the column widths to what you want. If you want all facts and All places, just search on a comma (if you have a comma in all places) or remove the last "FILTER" line from the code or the Filter from the Rows tab in the query.

I set up this query also to help with sorting PLACES, (e.g. so that England came first and street last), however I have found it even easier just to key all my places starting with country, state >> street etc, it is not orthodox, but it makes sorting and finding addresses so much easier. see Rearrange Address and Place Parts Plugin (12330) 28 Mar 2015 17:43

GULP! That does all I was hoping for and a lot more! Many thanks indeed. The ability to keep it open and go to add entries is a major bonus. Being able to sort by fact, and click to see more, is brilliant.

Yes, I was "exporting" the .GED file rather than trying to read the original, but that was from Legacy because I haven't added much data yet with FH6: I'm still learning how to drive it. I've exported a .GED from FH6 now, and Heredis on the iPad is in the (slow) process of importing and converting it. I won't need it for "place searches" now that I have the Custom Query from Jim, but it will continue to be very useful when I go to the local Records Office or go visiting rural churches to browse their registers. When I do that, I usually take a notepad and a stock of pencils (and a camera when it's to the churches).

Just jumping in to say thanks for this question and the answers. I've just come across someone who died away from home and, looking at the list of places in the records tab, I could see that there were several other links to that place but couldn't work out how to find out what they were. I've sussed it now and my man died in his brother's house

Yes, it has been mentioned before, it would be nice to have a "like" button, if for nothing else that contributors know what kind of things are helpful to other people, but I don't think the forum software lends itself to that. I suppose the moral is, don't be shy, and don't worry about getting it wrong or offering an alternative, that's how we (and as importantly everyone else) learns.
