Bug - Daft error message when changing dates

Post by BettyofKent » 07 Jul 2015 18:57

I am using version 5, I had no problems on Windows 7, but now I'm using Windows 8 I'm getting a very annoying bug.

When I change the BIRTH date I get a little box with this message:

Possible error
Date is earlier than the individual's birth date.

How can a birth date be earlier than a birth date??
It doesn't make sense, although it would of course if I had changed the Baptism/Christening date to earlier than the birth date.

I've even had a similar message when changing a Burial date, with the error box telling me the date is later than the death...I should hope so!

I've started a new tree, so I'm correcting a lot of dates as I check census ages with BMDs, & this bug is driving me mad!

I use W7 and FH6 and have seen this message. IIRC it happens when one fact that has a death date that is only the year eg 1999, and then in another fact you enter has a specific date in the form 31121999................... I can't remember how I fixed it but it might have been by putting the fact with the specific death date higher in the fact list than the one with the general year-only date................

Hope this helps

That is the standard Date check warning message popup, but it is occurring under the wrong conditions. It is not specifically to do with Windows 8.

The question that comes to mind is "How did you migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 8?"

It is possible that your configuration or settings are not quite as they should be.
Did you follow the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide?
In particular how did you install FH V5?
How did you transfer all your customisations and preference settings?

There may be something awry with your Fact Set configuration.
Can you post a screenshot of the Tools > Work with Fact Sets > Birth > Properties and similarly for the Burial fact.
Also try using the Installation Settings button to see if that fixes things.
If it does, then try the global fix in how_to:family_historian_installation_problems#v2_v3_upgrade_to_v5_v6_upsets_fact_sets|> V2/V3 Upgrade to V5/V6 Upsets Fact Sets.

Thank you both for your replies.

My hard drive failed on my last laptop, so I had to start afresh with my new laptop, installing V5 from the disc.
I though I had backed up my customisations & preferences but couldn't find the backup, so had to try & remember what I had done before.

I followed your suggestion "Tools > Work with Fact Sets > Birth > Properties and similarly for the Burial fact." & clicked Installation settings & it worked, I no longer get the error message.

I'm sure I've never touched these settings before so I don't know what happened but no matter, it's OK now :-)

Thank you again for your help.

I am glad that worked Betty.
As a reminder to others, and to Betty, see how important it is to make sure you have suitable backups.
See glossary:backup_and_recovery|> Backup and Recovery and follow its advice.

Betty, make sure you have updated your FH V5 installation to V5.0.11 from fhugdownloads:contents:family_historian_5.x.y_upgrade|> Family Historian Version 5.0.11 Upgrade.

You may need to repeat the Installation Settings trick on other Facts.
To fix them all in one go use the 2nd paragraph in how_to:family_historian_installation_problems&#v2_v3_upgrade_to_v5_v6_upsets_fact_sets|> V2/V3 Upgrade to V5/V6 Upsets Fact Sets.

Thanks Mike. I've now done the update, which I didn't know about as when I click 'check for updates' I'm told about v6.

I'll now do a backup of my settings & keep it in Dropbox this time, so if the worst happens again I'll at least be able to find it!

Thanks again for your help.
