Media file names

Post by davesearching » 26 Jun 2015 14:11

I'm trying to include source media file names in reports with no success. If I untick "Show Source Pictures" the filename is no longer printed and I can see no way of then printing the filename.

There is a difference between the file name and the title of the Multimedia record.

When you display the Source pictures in a report it is not actually the file name that is displayed but the name of the Multimedia record in FH. In practice these may be the same, because when you link a media file to FH a Multimedia record is always created, and by default the name of this record will be the same as the file name. You can optionally rename the Multimedia record so that it presents a more meaningful or complete title for the image in reports, and you can override the title with a caption of your choice via the Use Note as Caption option. (This is useful if you have several frame links to the same multimedia record and want different captions for the various links).

The title of the Multimedia record linked to a Source is only displayed in the Sources section of a report if source images are displayed. (Assuming you have Inc. Picture Title in Caption ticked.) I don't think the file name can be displayed at all.

Dave, may I ask why you want to report Media filenames without displaying the image?

Mike,

I find narrative reports that include images to be difficult to follow and they look very messy.
My intention is (was?) to include all basic images, BMD and census, as a separate report outwith FH, in filename sequence. Thus having the media name in a FH report would facilitate the cross reference.
Alternatively is there any way using a query whereby I could list all sources for all individuals, listed by individual.

OK, understood. Here are some ideas.

1)
Considering your original idea, it would be possible to produce a Plugin that for each Media item linked to a Source Record puts the Media Title into say the Source Record Custom Id field. (Remember there can be many Media per Source.) Then the Source Custom Id can be included in Narrative Reports to provide the Media Title cross-references.
You could then use Publish > Multimedia Report to list your Media, which has a useful reverse cross-reference to all records that link to the Media record.
(This works by using the Media Record Title as the cross-reference rather than the Media folder & filename.)

2)
In reports such as the Individual Narrative, each Source cross-reference includes the "Source Title" in quotes.
You could use the Publish > Miscellaneous Reports > Source Summary Report listed in Source Title alphabetical order and include all Media images. (The only snag is Media images can get displayed more than once if linked to more than one Source Record, but that is rare.)

3)
In the Plugin Store is List All Citations for a Source that works for just one Source at a time.
But I have a modified version List All Citations for All Sources that lists everything, and could be adapted to list cross-references from every Individual/Family, etc, to all their Source Media.

One thing to consider is how these cross-references and reports will evolve over time as Sources and Media are added. Think about how you would update the printed reports for all new Sources/Media without reprinting all the existing printed pages.

Many thanks for your ideas Mike.

Now to spend some time thinking this through.

Where may I find the List All Citations for All Sources plugin?

Try the options 1) and 2) and the Plugin Store version for 3) first.

If still interested in my variant, then it can be downloaded from posting Import from TMG - Missing Some Citations (11462).
