Problems with merging.

Post by Mrspurpl » 21 Jun 2015 03:49

I am having problems merging two projects. When I go to the "merge/compare" tab, it takes me to the document files, but doesn't give the options of selecting the files I want to merge. I am running only the free trial version at the moment, can I do this function on this version?

The trial version should be fully functional, except for the fact that it can't run plugins. It's a long time since I looked at the trial version but, from what I seem to remember, there used to be a limit to the size of the project you are allowed to create/edit. If there still is, then that may be where you run into problems with trying to do a merge, or is it possible you've reached the 30 day cut-off for the trial.

Assuming you have not hit the size or time limits referred to by Mervyn, you should be able to do a merge.

File > Merge/Compare file will take you to a dialog box headed Select Family Historian Project File or GEDCOM File. This will open at Documents because that is the most likely location for your projects.
If you have used the default settings your projects will be in Documents>Family Historian Projects.

The project you currently have open is the one into which the merge will take place, so you don't need to select it. If the file you want to merge into it is elsewhere, either move it into Documents first or navigate to it using the file path at the top of the dialog box. Then select the appropriate GEDCOM file and click Open.

(If this second GEDCOM is already part of a project you may have to drill down to it within the project structure, as it doesn't seem to be possible to select the whole project, despite what it says in the heading of the dialog box. Is this the problem you encountered? Perhaps this is a bug.)

Remember to follow the advice on making backup copies of both projects/files first.

Having just tried out the procedure on the Full Version, I think Lorna's expertise may well have hit on the answer: To select the file you want to pull in to your 'main' Project you have to keep working through your directory structure by selecting 'Open' until the GEDCOM file is revealed, then select that file and click on 'Open' once more, which should then continue the process to the next stage of allowing you to choose your merge options (or allow to to cancel out of the process).

I have moved this posting to the General Usage Forum which is more appropriate for an FH problem, because it is not to do with Importing and Exporting with another product.

It is perhaps worth mentioning that initially FH always starts the file selection dialogue from the My Documents folder, regardless of the type of file required. Subsequently, it often starts file selection from the folder last visited, again regardless of what type of file is now required. So you must know where to find the file you want to use, and navigate to it.

This is similar to say MS Word or Excel, when you use their internal Open file dialogue it won't magically start in the folder where your required document happens to reside. You must navigate to the appropriate folder first and then choose the document you want to open.

If you are trying to merge two existing Family Historian Projects then I beiieve the best procedure would be

File > Import/Export > Import> Family Historian Project

You will again be taken to a file chooser starting at Documents. You need to find the project folder for the projectname you intend to merge (into your current project) and then drill down to find the projectname.fh_proj and select that. You will then get a message asking to choose between Suggesting candidate matches for merging or Do not match any records,
