duplicate record ids

Post by JohnVW » 09 Apr 2015 11:37

One of my projects always opens with the warning that it contains duplicate record ids and is effectively corrupt. The exception report refers to three ids which I deleted as instructed but the warning and the exception report come up every time I open the project. Validation reports no errors. How do I stop the project opening with the warning and the exception report claiming there are duplicates?

If you post the Exception Report we will be able give more precise advice.

You cannot delete Record Ids, you must delete the Records containing those duplicate Record Ids, or alter the Record Ids by using Tools > Work with Record Identifiers.

Do you Save the Project after the changes?

Can you possibly explain how the duplicate Record Ids may have arisen?
Have you been editing the Gedcom file?

This is the exception report shown from the outset -- it has not changed.

Thanks. The exception report is attached.

I deleted the complete records with ids 1,2 and 4 [and others in that series]. I had entered ten new people who for some unexplained reason seemed to have been given ids 1-10 instead of in the thousands as all other additional names had been and still are. So I deleted all the anomalous names with their ids [1-10] and re-entered the names/details, which then automatically got consecutive numbers at the end as usual.

I saved the project after deleting and before entering new names, and continue to save it. I have not edited the gedcom file [wouldn't know how to do it].

The Exception Report is nothing to do with Individual Records as it specifically says Record Type=Place.
So you did not need to do anything to your newly entered Individual Records.

(Although the use of low Individual Record Ids is concerning and should not happen.)

As I am sure you are aware, there are different types of record: Individual, Family, Note, Source, Media, etc.
Each record type allocates its own series of Record Id quite independently, and should always continue on from the last one allocated.
FH V6 introduced a new Place Record type to hold Place details such as Lat/Longitude.
It is these Place Records that are getting duplicate Record Ids but they are automatically allocated by FH.

So it appears there is some sort of fault that is causing these problems, which should be reported to Calico Pie via support@family-historian.co.uk.
Please send the Exception Report and mention your low Individual Record Id anomaly.
Explain when it first started, and they may ask you to send a copy of your Gedcom file.
Cross refer to this posting in the FHUG Forums.

Many thanks for the information, and the advice. It doesn't sound as if there's anything I've done or can do to fix this, so I've written to Calico Pie as you suggest.

You can delete the three Place Records at fault, and FH will automatically recreate them.
You may need to add =RecordId() to a Column in the Records Window for Place Records to identify them.
However, doing so may destroy the evidence that Calico Pie need to fix the fault, so wait until you get a reply.
