Hello. I'm new to this. The MyHeritage website said no charge. When I click on 'View record', I'm asked to subscribe £5.00 a month. I do not understand that.

Where exactly did you see it say no charge?
Some details like the initial matching is free, but viewing record details is not.

Yes, be careful you understand what the free bit is. Sometimes "free" means absolutely everything is free including all the answers in whatever form they come. Sometimes it means you can submit the enquiry for free, you get a basic list back for free but you pay to see the details. Sometimes payments are needed to see the basic list as well as the details.

And sometimes you even need to pay to submit the question.

Also you need to be aware that two sites with (say) parish registers for Blankshire may not give exactly the same results - one might only have transcripts, the other might have images of the original pages.

I signed up for MH but not through the link in FH so MH refused to discount the price even though I am a FH user.

Well, if you don't use the FH link how would MH know you're a FH user?

I agree. I should have thought of that as I went through the sign-up process with them but I must have been distracted. My own fault.

Of course, they could have given me a refund and allowed me to sign-up again thro' FH but they rejected that. Bit short-sighted really as I have now told them NOT to auto-renew at the end of the subscription period.

Frankly, I am not that impressed with the service compared with Ancestry. But "each to their own"

I have been a subscriber to Ancestry for about 6 years... I am wondering whether to subscribe to My Heritage as well... does anyone have a view on the pros and cons ?

I've subscribed to Ancestry for over 10 years. Personally I wouldn't bother with My Heritage as well.

Just seeing that My Heritage has found a match means it's a pretty good bet that there's a record on Ancestry, probably with the same individual's name and the date of the event (unless Ancestry have mis transcribed it, in which case you might need to be a bit creative with the search parameters).

I've found Ancestry hot matches very useful in providing leads to follow up and validate (I never take them at face value). A shame that FH can't link to Ancestry's hot matches in the same way it does to My Heritage, it seems unlikely but there's another very active thread about that on here

Personally, I think I wasted my money by subscribing to MH. I don't like the user interface and it has not given me anything more than I could get from Ancestry and free sites such as the Family Search site https://familysearch.org or other sites mentioned elsewhere on here.

I have - on-and-off - temporarily subscribed to FindMyPast and got some info from them but essentially you have to look at the likelihood of MH containing information which you may want. Its main benefit will be if there are other MH subscribers who have info which you want but as far as the MH main databases I don't see they currently offer anything I might need to add to my own research.

I would have preferred FH to have forged links with other database holders.

However, each to their own.

As a refugee from FTM, I'm considering subscribing to MyHeritage. I understand there is a discount for year 1 of a MyHeritage subscription for FH users. That discount isn't reflected in the prices cited within FH compared to the prices cited externally. Am I missing something?

While FH users get a discount, it doesn't hurt to keep an eye out for other offers.

One of my local genealogical societies (the California State Genealogical Societies) offers access to their members as a benefit of membership. Other societies have discounts on Find My Past for their members.
