V6 Other Pictures in Reports

Post by tatewise » 23 Feb 2015 19:01

A recent [MRU] Mailing thread Adding Media to Events prompted me to revisit Pictures in Reports and discover a new feature that has not been specifically announced by Calico Pie.

In many Reports Options on the Pictures tab there is a new Picture Type called Other but its explanation is only given in the Help for Individual Reports:
'Other' pictures means pictures for facts (that is, events or attributes) or Places, or both. These display in whichever section they are relevant to. Pictures of places are only displayed in the first context in which the place in question is referenced within the report (a report showing details for multiple individuals is treated as multiple reports for these purposes).
So because they are now a separate type with their own settings, Media linked directly to Facts (or Places) can be positioned independently from Media linked to the Multimedia tab, instead of being lumped together as in earlier versions.

So for example Individual/Spouse/Children Pictures can be in Rows Above Text while Other Pictures can be to Right of Text and perhaps a different size, which positions them more closely to their associated Facts.

Some more experimentation may reveal more details about this useful new feature.

The fault that needs fixing is to add the Help for Other Pictures to all the appropriate Report Types.

I'm finding it difficult to position media above specific facts. It either lumps them all together or down the side. I guess positioning them down the side is okay if you only have one photo per fact or a very long fact if you have more than one photo. I'm struggling to see any improvement over previous versions of Family Historian in this respect. I have so far only tried this on the 'Individual Summary Report' however.

Craig, previous versions of FH did NOT have Other as a Picture Type at all.
So all the Multimedia tab Pictures and Fact linked Pictures were all inseparably lumped together.

Now at least, as you say, you can have the Multimedia tab Pictures in Rows across the top and Fact Pictures on the Right down the side of the Facts text.

Furthermore, taking the Individual Summary Report for example:
  • Individual Multimedia tab Pictures appear in the main section at the very top.
  • Pictures linked to Individual Facts appear in the Individual Events and Attributes section.
  • Spouse Family, Spouse & Children Multimedia tab Pictures appear first in the Marriage section.
  • Pictures linked to Family Facts appear last in the Marriage section
Previously in FH V4/5:
  • Individual Multimedia tab Pictures and Pictures linked to Individual Facts appeared together in the main section at the very top.
  • Spouse Family Multimedia tab Pictures and Pictures linked to Family Facts appeared together at the start of the Marriage section, followed by Spouse & Children Multimedia tab Pictures.
  • No Pictures appeared against any Facts in the Individual Events and Attributes section at all.
So I believe it is a significant improvement, and if Pictures linked to Facts were tightly aligned with the Facts I suspect the Reports would have big gaps.
