Need help with Places

Post by DragonLady » 22 Feb 2015 04:45

I am new to the board and new to FH. I have FH6 and have uploaded GEDCOM from FTM 2012. I realize that is part of the problem but now how do I fix errors such as a fact note being in the Place area and as such I cannot delete the place. For example I may not have where someone actually died but I have 'Died young' or 'Died at Sea,'

Please Help?

Have you checked out this page:
how_to:import_from_family_tree_maker|> Import from Family Tree Maker (FTM)

But beware, I don't think FTM is the easiest program to migrate from to anywhere, so, depending on how you have used FTM, expect some extra manual work after import.

I would also suggest you try lots of "different" dummy runs (if options are available) until you get the best fit. Spend time thinking how you want your data in FH, and don't forget the many useful Plugins for FH.

Welcome to the FHUG DragonLady.

As a newcomer to FH may I suggest you spend some time reviewing the how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers and it should pay dividends in the longer term.

Regarding your Place question, the Place fields in FH are handled a bit differently from other fields because they are linked to Place Records by their Place Name.

'Died young'
Ideally this should be recorded in the Age field just above & right of Place field.
Click on [...] button that appears to the right of the Age field.
Then you could choose Child or Infant or Younger than age given below and enter an age in Years.

Alternatively, just add Died young to the Note field.

Finally, assuming you only have one Died young Place name, its Place Record must be deleted.
So, open the Records Window, select the Places tab, and find the Died young Record.
Its Links column should say 1 if it is only used once.
If it is only 1, then highlight the Record name and hit the Delete key.
But if greater than 1 ask for more help.

'Died at Sea'
This is a form of Place Name and if you have any idea where at sea, then it could simply be kept as a Place.
You should be able to simply edit the Place name to say At Sea, Atlantic Ocean, USA.
This will create a new Place Record for that new Place Name.

Alternatively, just add Died at Sea to the Note field.

Finally, the old Died at Sea Place record must be deleted as above, providing its Links column is 0 or 1.

Jimlad68 & Tatewise, THANK YOU!!! I have been chasing my tail on this issue for a month now! I have cleaned up 5 records already, only a couple hundred to go. :o

I am sure I will have more questions in the future but at least now I can get started on cleaning up these place records.

Jimlad68 I will have to look at the FTM > FH more soon, unfortunately FTM is on a computer that is on the fritz so I will have to work with transferring all that data eventually (I have over 30,000 members in one file). I am a descendent of the Sherman's from Essex on both my Maternal and Paternal side and thankfully years ago I discovered a group who had already done most of the dirty work... now if I could find a group for the Irish side.

Again thank you so much!!!
