Repeated Fact types

Post by mitcheip » 13 Feb 2015 19:47

I have some very unusual behavior that I think is a bug rather than me doing something wrong but I thought it would be worth checking here first.

First thing to say is that the data has been imported from TMG.

I have a "Cremation" event for a person and I wanted to change the role of one of the witnesses to be "Mourner".
(A) I clicked the witness and then clicked Edit.
(B) I clicked the Role drop down box and the only Role was "Witness".
(C) So I clicked "Create new role type". It then says the fact type "Cremation" has no definition. You must create one etc etc".
(D) I clicked OK and got the "Create Fact Definition" dialog.
(E) Originally I thought the TMG import had created the new fact type so I created a new Fact Set called TMG Import and assigned the Fact to that set.
(F) I then decided to check the Fact Type out, (Tools/Fact Types....) clicked to show hidden and found that the Standard Cremation fact had been disabled and the new one under TMG Import set was the "live" one.

If I look at the Sentence Template it shows :-
{individual} was cremated {date} {place} {age}. <The cremation was attended by {role=attender}. ><The mourners included {role=mourner}. ><The minister at the cremation was {role=minister}. ><The rabbi at the cremation was {role=rabbi}. ><The priest at the cremation was {role=priest}. >

Which is great and the Witness roles are there as :- Attender, Mourner, Minister, Rabbi, Priest, (I wanted Mourner).

I went back to the original Cremation Fact, clicked on the Witness and the whole process starts again at (A)

I have done this 3 times now adding the Cremation Fact to a different Fact set each time, so I now have one "live" Fact Type and 3 that have been "eclipsed". One of them is the "Standard" Fact Type so I assume that got Eclipsed the 1st time thorough. Their definition all look good but I am never able to access the list of Roles for the Witnesses.

I have checked a few other Facts and there Witness Roles look and operate correctly.

Hi

I think you will find the answer to your question is within the help file under the heading Work With Fact Sets in the Fact Types Dialog - Visible and Status settings.

Thanks David, I can see why I'm creating multiple Fact Types now but the issue is the Imported Cremation Fact doesn't link to the Standard Fact.

I deleted all the Cremation Fact Types apart from the Standard Fact Type. I then clicked show hidden and there was an undefined Cremation Fact Type. I tried to delete it but the software wouldn't let me because there were Facts using that Fact Type.

I have also looked down the list of other undefined Fact Types and can see that Emigration is duplicated although the Standard Fact is Individual and the Import is Family.

So I am now convinced this is a bug in the TMG import whereby the Cremation Fact is creating a new fact type rather than linking to the standard one.

The problems may lie with the TMG Tag Type List.

I have looked at my TMG sample Project and there is no Cremation tag defined. So I suspect it is being imported as a Custom Fact because there is no GEDCOM tag CREM defined in TMG. What is the TMG Tag Type List definition for Cremation in your project?

It is not obvious why EMIGration should import as a Family Event. What is the TMG Tag Type List definition for Emigration in your project? I have Type : Standard and Tag group : Other event and GEDCOM : EMIG.

@Mike,

I have checked TMG and as you say its a custom Tag with the GEDCOM of EVEN. Presume this is why the import created an undefined Cremation Fact type.

I have used your Change Any Fact Tag Plugin to change the EVEN-CREMATION to CREMATION. Much quicker than re-typing. THANKS!!!

The above Plugin has also answered another question I had about how to change a Facts "Fact Type".

With the Emigration the GEDCOM is EMIG. I have checked the actual event and its the whole family that was emigrating so there are two principles and a number of Witnesses in TMG and probably why the import has created this new fact type as Family.

Your Cremation diagnosis and correction is perfect.

If any TMG Fact has two Principles that are a parent couple, then FH will create a Family Fact for the couple.

This is explained in how_to:import_from_tmg#import_tmg_project|> Import from The Master Genealogist (TMG) under Import Guide: "Every other Tag with 2 Principal Persons as parents is a Family Fact (Event/Attribute) e.g. Marriage".

Unfortunately, the Change Any Fact Tag Plugin cannot fix that, so you must change the Emigration Facts by hand.
