Surname and dates list

Post by Jessie 888 » 10 Feb 2015 14:39

As a newbie I’m only just beginning to look at queries and still don’t really know what I’m doing!

Sometimes when I’m off to the library/record office for a research day I just want to print off a handy list of, say, all the Brentons in my tree with their dates. None of the query types listed seemed to fit (though I’ve probably missed an obvious one) so I tried to do a Contains Text query which was partly successful but how do I do it with their dates listed alongside? It also threw up lots of records that didn’t have a Brenton surname so I’m wondering is there an easier, nifty way?!

(I also tried to do it from the Records page and highlight all those with the same surname but then it wanted to print out about 100 pages!) :?
Would spend every waking hour researching my ancestry if my family and friends allowed it! ;)

So I presume you want something similar to the Records Window listing with Names, LifeDates, Relationship, etc, but for a selected Surname.

The best way is to start with the View > Standard Queries > All Individuals.
Now create a custom version using the Query Menu top right to Save As Custom Query and give it a memorable name such as All Individuals for Surname.

Now select its Rows filter tab.
Near the bottom, to the right of the Expression box click the [...] Data Ref Assistant button.
Click the [+] expand button next to Name and select :SURNAME qualifier, then click OK.
Ensure Condition: is Add if...
Ensure Expression: is %INDI.NAME[1]:SURNAME%
Ensure Operator: is matches
On the right tick Parameter and set Label: to Surname.
Finally click the Add button.

Now click the Run Query triangular button centre top and it will prompt for a Surname.
Enter Brenton and click OK.
You can now use the Print icon button to print a hard copy.

If it is too wide then drag the header column separators to make the columns narrower.

To run the Query again use View > Custom Queries > All Individuals for Surname.
