Where to record Monumental Inscriptions

Post by janefrances » 17 Jan 2015 14:24

I have a couple of gravestone photographs with inscriptions to input onto Family Historian. When I looked at the fact set there is a grave location attribute. Would I use this as a source with a multimedia attached?

The other option I know of is to put it in that persons property box and use the multimedia tab, but the photo appears next to their name on the focus window. Not keen on that! :?

Thanks in advance
Jane

Are you looking at a custom fact set? I don't think grave location is a standard fact.

However there is a standard burial fact, so you could attach the image to the burial fact. (Having said that, I see you are using FH V4, and I can't remember whether V4 allowed media to be attached directly to facts.)

The gravestone itself is a source for the information about date of death and location of burial, so I would create a Source record called something like 'John Smith: gravestone' and attach the image to the source. Then cite the source against both the death event and the burial event.

Hi Lorna, The grave location is part of a custom fact set I downloaded from the forum. I like your idea of linking the photo to the death and burial fact. So I'll do that instead. :)
Many thanks

Just to add to Lorna's excellent advice that grave stones can sometimes include other data such as birth dates and details of where someone lived at the time of their death and so you might also create birth and/or residence facts linked to the grave source.
