Adding a source for a non fact media record

Post by philmcleod » 16 Jan 2015 09:26

Is there a way of actually adding a source to a picture of an individual or a place as these are not facts.
Where I have pictures obtained from various sources I would like to record where the original picture came from

There are various ways of achieving that Phil:
  1. The easiest is to open the Property Box for the Media Record and add the details to the Note field.
  2. Alternatively, in the Property Box on the All tab, right-click the title and choose Add Note > Add Link to Note Record. Add the details to this separate Note Record, that can be linked to several Media if they all come from the same Source.
  3. Going one step further, you can add standard Source Citations to that Note Record.
  4. A little more obscure, but if there is any Link/Note in the Media Record on the All tab, then right-click Add Source > Add Link to Source Record is supported.
It may seem odd that you cannot add a Source Citation directly to a Media Record, but that is an oddity of the GEDCOM specification.

Thanks Mike. I thought that unless I was missing the obvious, there must be a good reason. Your option 1 is easiest and is a direct reference against the particular photo
