V5.0.11 Running slow/freezing.

Post by bruceernest » 15 Jan 2015 17:52

Thinking about upgrading to V6 but my current version is running slow, have to wait for it to go to Focus window etc.
Occasionaly sticks/freezes for maybe 30/ 40seconds. Is it my computer or FH?
Using Windows 7.
What can I do?

Probably your computer; if it is a windows PC it slowly get full of programs and junk. Mine is running slower and I only did a reinstall last summer!
I also find antivirus software tends to slow it down when running in the background. You may have some unwanted malware as well.

A good program to clean up the PC is CCleaner ( short for Crap cleaner ! ); it has a few different parts. Clearing out tempfiles cache etc. as well as a registry cleaner. Make sure you know you login details as if you clear the cache you will need to log into online websites again.

Another good program for checking for Malware is Malwarebytes which has a free version - CCleaner is free as well.

You could be running out of hard drive space and a good cleanout of unwanted programs and files is a good thing to do as well as a disc defragmentation.

There is a lot to say:

Bruce, a little housekeeping:
Could you please update your FH Version so it appears in the right-hand panel.
At the very top of this FHUG page click User Control Panel, then on the Profile tab select Family Historian Version 5 at the bottom and click Submit.

You say in your subject line V5.1 but there is no such FH version number?
Use Help > About Family Historian and quote the version reported there.

Bonzo, has much good advice, but defrag is not necessary in Win 7 as it is automatic.

Bruce, have you a large Project with many Multimedia images?
This can slow the startup, so try Tools > Preferences > General > Advanced and untick Auto-load Thumbnail Images.

Also registry cleaners are a waste of time and are more likely to break something than do anything useful.

Thanks for all your help but I still have the problem. I have tried everything suggested, already use CC Cleaner and Malware byte.
Would unloading and reloading FH be an answer? If so how could I safely do this?

"Keen to upgrade to V6 but reluctant whilst I have this "hanging and freezing" problem which incidentally does not happen on any other programs I am running.
There is plenty of disc space, FH version is 5.0.11'

You could try re-installing FH but I doubt if that is the problem.
Make sure you have a full backup of all your Projects just in case, but uninstall and re-install should not upset any data or settings.

Are you sure you tried Tools > Preferences > General > Advanced and unticked Auto-load Thumbnail Images?

Another possibility is an over aggressive Anti-Virus Tool checking every FH file, even if you have not changed your AV Tool.
Try temporarily suspending your AV Tool with Internet disconnected to be safe.
Or if you know how, try excluding all the FH folders, in C:\Program Files... and C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\... and My Documents\Family Historian Projects\.

I don't suppose you have an auto-backup tool, or cloud storage tool, that is operating on your FH Project files and conflicting with FH?
