Private Notes

Post by DavidNewton » 05 Jan 2015 10:09

[These comments follow on from the Research Notes (11086) thread in the New Wish List Requests Forum.]

Another alternative is to make your research notes private, ensure that you have not ticked include private notes and they will, as far as reports are concerned, be almost invisible. I say almost because if you have a private note with all the text private it is possible to get blank note heading in an individual summary report indicating that there is content but it is private.

David, you should be able to eliminate that blank Note heading.
Just ensure you have no layout characters, such as spaces, tabs, or newlines, outside the privacy [[ brackets ]].

Mike

Thanks for the suggestion. One of the beauties of FH is the wide range of options in reports and I think this problem arose because I chose to include Notes in the main section of the Individual Summary Report rather than having them in separately headed sections at the end of the report.

So I unticked the section for Individual Record Notes and set Notes to show if not empty in the Main Section. These Note Labels then seem to show, whether or not the note is private. I re-selected the section for Individual Record Notes and choose to hide Notes in the main section. This then resulted in total disappearance of the private note as you said.

However, the story does not end yet. If I have two notes, one private and one not then the private note is not shown but the Note numbering reflects the notes. Thus if the first Note is private and the second not then the second note is still headed Note 2 and there is no Note 1, again flagging the existence of a private note. Generally speaking this does not matter and the space consuming blank line has gone which is good but the existence of a private note is still flagged. if you really want to hide a private note and the fact that there is a private note then re-ordering of the Notes is required so that all the private notes come at the end.

Personally I reserve private notes for undocumented (and probably unverifiable) rumours given to me orally together with any information I have found which may prove embarassing to certain persons who might read it.

That is an interesting inconsistency David.

When the dust has settled on FH V6, it might be worth reporting the inconsistent mishandling of [[private notes]] in the Report Options > Main Section Items. The Note heading should be suppressed.

Also report the point about the numbering of Note headings. The numbers should be sequential starting from 1 and totally disregard hidden [[private notes]].
