how to precede a role with a/an in witness sentences

Post by setait » 02 Jan 2015 18:34

Hi, I'm a new FH user and a TMG exile. I've been creating some new facts to cope with Scottish records and can't find a way to precede a role name with "a/an" in witness sentences eg "{individual} was {role name} of the will of {principal} {date} {place}" where {role name} is executor. The help says

"Fact Value (with a/an prefix)
Code: {a/an value}

Only used with attributes. Inserts the fact value prefixed by ‘a’ if the value begins with a consonant (e.g. ‘a sailor’) or by ‘an’ if the value begins with a vowel (e.g. ‘an airman’). "

but I can't find anything similar for events. Also, why does the role name appear in sentences with an initial capital, even when it's been created in all lower case?

What am I missing?

Welcome to the FHUG Sheena.

Yes, it is quite a complex area to tackle at such an early stage.

The thing to do is have a look a some of the existing Witness Sentence definitions for say the Marriage Event that has lots of Witness Roles.

The key thing to recognise is that the Witness Sentence is specific to a particular Role.
So when constructing the Sentence you know the Role and don't need to use {role name}.
Just enter the text you need such as:
"{individual} was executor of ... " for the Witness Sentence for the Executor Role.
"{individual} was an airman ... " for the Witness Sentence for the Airman Role.

Thanks, Mike. I was using the Probate event as my example, I didn't think of using marriage - duh!

I'm used to using roles and sentences from TMG so the principles are familiar, I just need to learn my way around the new systems and structures of FH.
