I'm sorry if I am going over old ground. I have just upgraded to version 6 (was waiting to Christmas Day, so 2 hours early). I am just reading the tips about the media files. I currently have a folder for all my FH stuff. within this, there is a folder called FH files containing my ged files. I have another folder called Melanie and then subfolders for each surname. Each surname then has a subfolder for each person and this contains certificates, photos, censuses etc. I want to maintain the folder structure from Melanie onwards but I am not fussed about where the ged files are contained. I also have another folder for my husband and again there are subfolders for each surname etc. I keep all his media files separate to mine though my ged file has both sets of information. What is the best way to deal with this media and keep most of this structure? Move the Melanie and my husband's folder to the same folder as the Ged file? I'm a little confused but I suspect that is sleep deprivation.

Hi Melanie, what Version of FH have you upgraded from?
Was it Version 3 or Version 4?

Does the concept of FH Projects mean anything to you?

In any case FH V6 should continue to use your existing files and folders.

BUT if you have upgraded from Version 3, or never adopted the Version 4/5 Project structure, then there are many advantages in doing so, and we can talk you through how to do it, but perhaps not on Christmas Day.

BUT do NOT attempt any changes until sure you understand the consequences.

I was version 3.1.2. So I have a vague idea on projects from watching the you tube videos and doing some reading. I was reading the tips for new comers in the help file which is why I was a little unsure. For now, should I just select the ged file and leave everything else as it is? I want to do some tidy up of my file (making sure I have recorded sources properly) and I am also doing a course so need to access my information.

Yes, that all fits. Prior to FH V4 you could locate your GEDCOM files and Media files anywhere you wanted in the PC.

There are two snags.
(1) When FH wants to save specific settings for your database it does not know where to save them, so some features in later FH Versions are disabled.
(2) All Media file links are absolutely specific, so if you move your database to a new PC (or change accounts, rename folders, etc) they will almost certainly become broken links.

Projects solve both problems by defining a folder structure in which your database resides. It is usually quite easy to convert from what is called Standalone GEDCOM mode to Project Structure mode, but you need to understand the conditions under which that works and allow some time to concentrate on the process.

In the meantime, FH V6 should continue to work happily with your Standalone GEDCOM mode, but some features are inhibited.

I have backed everything up so I might give it ago. I much prefer relative links than absolute links. I will wait till I have had some coffee and the kids are occupied. I used to be pretty tech savvy especially with databases. If all fails I will revert to standalone and contact you after Christmas.
