Unicode UTF-16 and text editors

Post by AdrianBruce » 19 Dec 2014 22:13

Right now, my domestic workload means I am having to stick with v5 but I am, of course, taking a keen interest in v6.

One thing interests me - on numerous occasions, I have opened up my GEDCOM in a text editor (Notepad++ is my current favourite) and hacked around to do things like alter tags.

What will the effect be on this idea of FH v6 using Unicode UTF-16? Will I have to choose my editors carefully? (I notice Notepad++ has encoding options for UTF-8 but not 16). (Please tell me if I've misunderstood FH and UTF, etc.)

Unicode UTF-16 GEDCOM files seem to work just fine in Notepad, WordPad and Notepad++.

Some versions of Notepad++ call it UCS-2 Little Endian encoding, which is compatible with UTF-16 as explained in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTF-16.

Mike, thanks for that. I think I saw that option in my version of notepad++ but didn't mention it as it seemed to have no relevance.
