Validate

Post by David Hawkins » 19 Dec 2014 16:12

I have just received Vn 6 after running with Vn 4 for some time. Can anyone tell me what Validate actually does please. I have deliberately changed data to give a birth long after a parent's death and long before a parent's birth. Validate does not pick either of these up.

My old Family Tree Vn 4 automatically alerted me to this on data entry and every time the record was viewed!

The validate simply checks the Gedcom is valid.

If you want to check the sanity of your data use View>Standard Query>Fact Date Warnings.

FH will tell you when you edit a fact date if you put a rubbish date in it and tab out of the field.

As the Help says:
Validate checks the current project/file for any internal storage errors, and optionally fix any errors found
It does not check for 'reasonable' Dates.

When entering unreasonable Date field values there should be a Possible Error popup warning.

Also try using the Show Project Statistics Plugin, which among other things reports all Date possible error warnings.

Although not new to FH, you are new to the features of FH V5/V6, so I advise you have a look at how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.
