How to include a standalone group photo

Post by JohnJ_au » 15 Dec 2014 04:32

I have this old photo of my grandfather with the year, and names of the other 2 (unrelated) people handwritten on the photo.

How should I handle this in FH6? I can add a multimedia entry, and add a link to the 3 people in the photo, but which fact do I link the photo to? Just linking the photo to the individual means the year that the photo was taken gets omitted from their timeline. Ideally I need a fact "Appeared in a group photo" but that doesn't seem to be available in FH6.

Any suggestions gratefully received ... John.

You can create any facts, via Tools>Fact Types, you want to add and attach the photo to the fact as well as the individual. Just add the fact in the normal way on the media window and then from the fact on the Property box add image via the image button.

Personally I don't have a media fact as such as the Photograph it's self can be dated, but it's entirely up to you.

Thanks Jane - on reflection that may be a cleaner way to go. Let me confirm what you are saying:

1. create a media record with Date set to the date the photo was taken.
2. create a link to the person who appears in the photo (perhaps use the el-neato face-frame linkage)
3. leave the photo connected to the person through the linkage as just another of the person's photos, and hope the reporting system can work out a way to recognise the photo was taken in year xxx so at age yyy.

That would declutter all my photo image events/facts :-)

Thanks ... John.

The reports by default will show the age of the person in the photograph as long as you date the photograph. I tend to only attach images to facts for specific events eg Wedding photographs or Grave stones, don't forget you can exclude any image link from reports or diagrams as you choose, I often attach gravestones, but exclude them from Diagrams.

Yes, look at the Family Historian Sample Project, which has several examples of just that; a group photo with Face Frames, and linked to the Multimedia tab of the Property Box rather than a Fact.

Anthony Edward MUNRO [1] and Ian Stephen MUNRO [6] are good examples.
In most Reports the photo Caption gives their Name, the photo Date, and their Age.

If you want to include more than one photo in Reports then use Report Options> Pictures tab and increase Max Pics.
