FH6 on Parallels/Crossover
I see on the order page of the myhistory site that XP is not supported.
I am using a Mac and currently have Parallels running XP which I do not intend to upgrade as there is other software installed that cannot run on higher version of windows.
I also run it on the mac via Crossover, though the installed bottle is XP type. Does anyone know how to upgrade the bottle type to win 7 without having to start from scratch again - it took a bit of effort to get it working at all in there (mainly as in crossover prior to version 4 or 5 the upgrades didn't load on top of each other properly).
Thanks,
Jeremy

Re: Family Historian 6 - 9th December
I bit the bullet and upgraded to Win 8.1 which I run under Parallels. In the end I did not like the Crossover interface and the fact that at the time I could only run Win XP. I don't know if the recent upgrade of Crossover will now allow Win 8/8.1. With Parallels 10 and Win 8.1 AND a memory upgrade (to 12GB) Windows runs very smoothly and does not slow down the rest of the computer. I am no expert on Win 8.1 but I though there was a way of running non-Win8.1 compatible software. Perhaps someone with more experience can comment.

Re: FH6 on Parallels/Crossover
Jeremy, see the how_to:install_family_historian_with_crossover_wine|> How to Install Family Historian with Crossover and Wine. This has not been updated, but I believe FH V6 & AS V4 do work well in a Win 7 Bottle. Calico Pie have committed to resolving any major issues, but some may have to wait until a free upgrade after the initial release. The process appears to be a lot smoother now, and any extra tips from FHUG users will be added to the Knowledge Base. A Crosstie for FH & AS may be on the cards, which makes things even easier. I am fairly sure you cannot upgrade a Bottle.
I am not sure why Gerry is asking "if the recent upgrade of Crossover will now allow Win 8/8.1". Since Crossover is an emulator, it does NOT need a copy of Windows. It allows FH and AS to be run in the same Bottle. Is that not enough? Why does the flavour of Bottle matter?
Gerry also says with Parallels "I though there was a way of running non-Win8.1 compatible software". But why would that be necessary since both FH & AS are already both Windows 8.1 compatible and that won't change with FH V6. However, it is correct that both Win 7 and Win 8 have compatibility modes for running programs designed for earlier versions of Windows.

Re: FH6 on Parallels/Crossover
As soon as FH6 is available I will purchase it and will put it on Crossover.
I am still struggling to create a Crosstie as the documentation on creating one has not been updated in a while and with the updates to OSX and Crossover things have changed from how the documentation describes them.
I will continue to try and create a Crosstie as time allows.

Re: FH6 on Parallels/Crossover
The flavour does matter because Crossover displays the window in accordance with the flavour of Windows. So a Win XP bottle displays a Win XP type window whereas the with full Win 8.1 I get an updated display. It may only be a matter of aesthetics but that's what I prefer.tatewise wrote:...

I think you have answered my question. Thanks. The original statement was: "I do not intend to upgrade as there is other software installed that cannot run on higher version of windows."Gerry also says with Parallels "I though there was a way of running non-Win8.1 compatible software". This Crossover Support Forum thread:
https://www.codeweavers.com/support/for ... msg=152700
appears to suggest that both Win7 Bottles and Win8 Bottles are available, and that you can change Bottle type using "wine configuration" (or winecfg).

Re: FH6 on Parallels/Crossover
I currently have FH v5.0.11 running in an XP bottle. I have bottled up some of the other genealogy programmes that I use in Win7 bottles and when I do FH v6 it will be in a Win 7 bottle as I do not like Win 8.
I successfully updated v5.0.9 to v5.0.11 without creating a new bottle a couple of months ago so there is no need to create a new bottle for a point upgrade. I have not tried a full version upgrade before so don't know if it will work but I will try that first.
