Family Historian 6 - 9th December

Post by margarita » 18 Nov 2014 12:39

I have already told my husband what his Christmas present to me will be. Good timing FH - thank you.

See announcement Family Historian 6 - 9th December (11789) for details.

This is great news, but not for myself who bought a copy of version 5 on 24.09.2014, if I knew about version 6 I would have waited. Could you PLEASE cosider me for a free upgrade, it is expensive to buy in South Africa, or at least consider an upgrade fee only?

Regards
Herman du Plooy

[EDIT by Mike Tate: I am sure at least a V5 to V6 Upgrade option will be available cheaper than a full licence ~ there always has in the past.]

Looks good, I'm getting quite excited. At the moment I use FH on both my old XP desktop and my slightly newer W7 laptop, do you know if FH6 will still be compatible with these, particularly my ancient XP, and will I be able to use on both with just the one licence as I do now?

Looking forward to seeing what other goodies Simon has up his sleeve.

Margaret.

[EDIT by Mike Tate: The good news is that FH V6 will almost certainly be licensed for use on two PC as it always has. The bad news is that it may not support Windows XP, probably for technical reasons associated with the new features.]

Sounds like an early Christmas present from me to me. :)

The mapping looks really interesting.

Maps have been available for years via at least two FH V5 Plugins.

Has there been an official (rather than the beta forum) date announcement for V6? If not I presume we are still tied to the confidentiality clause. I have not noticed any announcements on sites like Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter http://blog.eogn.com/. If it should be public knowledge those are the sites that should be putting it about.

Yes it has been officially announced here:

http://bulletins.family-historian.co.uk/?20141117

And has been the top news item on FHUG for a while.

In that case I might forward the link to Dick Eastman, surprised he hasn't spotted it already, or perhaps I missed his report.

I got an email about the upgrade. I assumed everyone had!
I usually lag a long way behind and don't intend to upgrade just yet!

I don't mean to be dismissive of the Plugins!

I've essentially been away from FH for the past couple of years, because of a hard disk crash, and because of work scheduling issues that prevented me from really getting up to speed on V5 after I installed it. I upgraded to V5 when I installed FH on the new computer, but I haven't really learned all the new features that have come about since V3 (I skipped V4 entirely).

I have downloaded several plugins, like the one for missing census records, but I must have overlooked the mapping ones. My apologies.

I would just like to ask a question about the 'upgrade' version of Family Historian 6.
I purchased the full copy of FH 3 and then upgraded to versions 4 and 5 and hopefully now version 6.
Does FH enable further 'upgrades' only without purchasing the full program version again.
I recently managed to load all versions and upgrades onto a new Windows 8.1 laptop, using all disks and Reg. Keys.
Thank You.

Yes, you will just need to purchase an upgrade. BTW you don't need to install earlier versions from V5 you can just install the upgrade and enter the previous licence key (eg V4 for V5 and V5 for V6 to install)

Yes, there will be a V5 to V6 Upgrade available at a discounted price.

As with the V4 to V5 Upgrade, it will NOT be necessary to install any earlier FH versions when say migrating to a new PC.

Just install the V5 to V6 Upgrade and it will ask for your current V5 to V6 Upgrade Licence Details and also your previous V4 to V5 Upgrade Licence Details.

So from now on you only need to preserve a safe backup copy of your latest Upgrade and details of the last two Licences.

If you want to see all the features in FH6 TWR computing have showing them for the last 10 days.

I found the TWR Computing details of Family Historian very confusing and in parts misleading.

It mixes up details, features & reviews of every release of FH from V2 through to V6 and has a number of omissions.

You are advised to consult either the http://www.family-historian.co.uk/features/ or how_to:about|> About Family Historian.
