Missing licence name from "Don't Lose this Key" card?

Hello all

I have the Family Historian v5.0.11 trial installed on Windows 7 32-bit. I've bought a boxed (sealed) copy of Family Historian v5 from S&N: I wanted to apply the licence details to my installation. Inside the Quick Start Guide was a single sheet headed "Don't Lose This Key!". On this sheet is a registration key.

Help - Enter Registration Key tells me I have to enter a licence name and registration key exactly as supplied. What licence name? I've checked the contents of the box and there are no other leaflets.

Help - Product Registration does nothing on my machine: I'd wondered if some kind of electronic registration might provide a licence name.

The registration key leaflet has a blank space on it: I'm wondering if that should have the licence name on it. Initially I'd thought the licence name could perhaps be my name but that produced an error "Entered licence name and key combination are not valid..".

Any ideas please?

David

Welcome to the FHUG David.

That is not a very good start!
The Licence Name is often your name or some other relatively short name, and the Registration Key is several groups of 6 alpha-numeric characters such as 0001H2-VKQ2AZ-TP4MC5-V0B59C-PYF6EN-7BUZ0Y.

Unless you can find the Licence Name somewhere on the box or Quick Start Guide then I suggest you contact S&N with your purchase details and ask for their help.

They may suggest you contact Calico Pie with the Registration Key to discover the matching Licence Name.

Is there not a difference between the download and retail versions? I have the retail version and it does not ask for a name only the registration key. You could try installing from the CD and see if that works.

That is useful feedback Eric that no one has mentioned before, and if correct needs the Knowledge Base for Installing FH to be updated.

Can David please confirm if that solves his problem.

It is correct that the retail packs cannot include the name of the purchaser because they are sealed packs. It sounds like David has an incomplete registration key piece of paper in his pack in which case he needs to contact his retailer for advice.

EDIT: on re-reading the original post David may already have everything he needs - the CD in the box and the registration key in the box.

Just to make it clear, if you purchase a CD/Boxed version of Family Historian you MUST install it over any free trial version you have in order to use the key in the box. The trial takes different format keys from the Boxed version, because of the lack of a Name so will not activate with the Box licence.

So install from the CD and then enter the key from the Box.

For other reasons I've not been able to run installs on that laptop for the moment so I've copied my project folder to a USB stick and installed from scratch on another computer where I'll be running the software for a short while.

I installed FH v5 from the CD in the box, and yes, I can confirm that the boxed version of Family Historian v5 does not require a "licence name".

All is running OK now.

Thanks to all.

David

That is good feeedback David, and I have updated the Knowledge Base on Installing from CD.

Please just check the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 Migration Guide to ensure you have migrated everything OK as it may need more than just the Project folder.
