Places Query

Post by goodwin2 » 14 Nov 2014 07:09

I have used the "places" query before but not recently. When I just tried to use it, nothing was generated. The query parameters box opened and had "loders" in it. When I put in what I was looking for nothing was in the result. I then downloaded the "places" query again and replaced the one already there and got the same non-result.

I tried to use "location" and that produced a location for all of my 44,000 + folks but that is NOT what I am trying to do.

Is this a result of good old [I'm joking] Windows 8.1 making a mess of FH? Just got a new computer and OS and with Windows 8.1 there is a lot of tweaking to do but I didn't think it could cause this type of problem. Have installed the classic view so it sort of looks like Windows 7.

Any help would be most appreciated.

I have split this from the Place List (11744) thread because it is nothing to do with that Tools > Work With Data > Places topic.

That fhugdownloads:contents:places|> Query:Individual ~ Places download does strangely default the Place: prompt to loders but that should be ignored.

The Query should report any Place field that contains the chosen text. It is case insensitive. Do NOT enclose in "string quotes".

I cannot explain why entering location would list every Individual unless they all have location in a Place field somewhere.

Try just entering a popular character such as e or a and it should list all Place names containing that character.

BTW: Although case insensitive, the Place: chosen must be spelt correctly.

FYI: When moving from old PC to new Windows 8.1 PC did you follow the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 Migration Guide?

Thanks Mike for the reply. Either user error or a hiccup in my FH must explain the earlier "non-results" that I was getting. Places now responds with results for the chosen spot.

Locations, as I mentioned, returns all of my file even when there is NO location in any of the fields for that individual. In looking at the description of the query, it does say ALL locations and it does not offer a choice as does places.

No, I didn't really follow the FH migration guide as I hired a geek to install the new computer and at the rate they charge, getting it up and running; installing programs and transferring files without training him in FH was about all I could afford.

Thanks again for your help.
