* Place List

I have autosave set to save every 5 minutes but I've found quite a few times that if I'm editing the Place List (through Tools menu, work with data), tidying it up as I often find several spellings for the same place, the autosave doesn't work and if I make one mistake and edit a place to the same name as an existing place, FH crashes and I lose all the changes.

As the Place List is part of each Family Historian file, shouldn't it autosave the same as when changes are made to each person entry please?

I've just edited a massive file and lost all the Place List changes so not a happy bunny as I've now got to go through them all again.

Sorry Nicola, that does appear to be a problem that has recently come to light.

I think it applies to any Tools > Work With Data option.

Remember that none of the Work With Data lists are real lists, but simply a temporary summary of all the actual Place, or Address, etc fields.

The only workaround is to occaisionally suspend the editing and close the Work With Data list, use Save, and then resume editing.

Thanks Mike, I had a feeling that was the only way of safeguarding changes.

Mind you, it would help if the editing facility didn't allow you to enter a place name that already exists because this is what always crashes FH in these circumstances.

Could you give more precise details of what causes the crash because I am not seeing that problem.

Tools - Work with data - Place List

If I amend an entry so that is completely identical to a new one, it appears to accept the change.

However, when I click close, FH freezes completely and I then get a message that it needs to close.

From memory, I think if I continue to try and edit the Place list it will eventually crash the same way, but the above is what happened yesterday.

Its happened several times over the previous months when I've had the need to edit the place list in this way.

Edit - that said, I've just tested it on a single entry and its not happened. I wonder if its only happening when I've edited a number of entries which obviously haven't been saved (as I've remained in the list) prior to then doing the above
