I'm sure I am just being thick, but:
I cannot seem to record an occupation correctly. I wish to record the main lifetime occupation of someone (a) - not the occupation they had when they first started work (b). When I choose (a) on the main tab it alters (b) on the facts tab. When I change (b) on the facts tab it alters (a) on the main tab. I do not want the two to be the same because factually they are not.
I'm sure there is a simple answer - please.

Re: Occupation
Hi Paul,
Could you please set your Family Historian Version on the right, otherwise we may not give a suitable answer.
Click on User Control Panel at the very top of this page, select Profile tab, and at bottom choose Family Historian Version, and click Submit.
The details shown on the Main tab are a summary of some Facts shown in full on the Facts tab.
So as you have explained, if you change the value on one tab, then its counterpart on the other tab also changes.
All Facts can have multiple instances.
Some common ones are Census Events, Residence Attributes, and Occupation Attributes.
Each instance has a different instance number, which in Data Reference terms is represented thus INDI.OCCU[1], INDI.OCCU[2], INDI.OCCU[3], etc.
These are all listed in the Facts tab and when sequenced in Date order will be listed in instance order.
The default Main tab only shows the first instance of the Facts.
In the case of Occupation this is INDI.OCCU[1].
So if you change INDI.OCCU[1] in one tab then the other tab changes too.
The question is: Which instance of OCCU is the "main lifetime occupation of someone"?
It might be INDI.OCCU[2] or may be INDI.OCCU[5].
So in general you cannot display that lifetime occupation on the default Main tab.
However, here are some ideas that may give you what you want.
If you have FH V4 or later, the Main tab can be customised.
So you could show several instances of Occupation.
I find that the last Occupation or two are usually the main Occupation, so I customise with INDI.OCCU[last-1] and INDI.OCCU[last].
Alternatively, you could create a custom Main Occupation Attribute to hold the main lifetime occupation.
Then the Main tab could be customised to show Main Occupation.
If customising the Main tab or creating a custom Attribute are a mystery to you then please ask for details.
