I have v5 installed on both PC and laptop. When I maker changes to the project file on one machine is there any way I can synchronise the updated file to the other?

Yes, the following three are popular among FHUG members and all offer free storage:
fhugdownloads:contents:dropbox|> Utility ~ Dropbox
fhugdownloads:contents:microsoft_skydrive|> Utility ~ Microsoft OneDrive (SkyDrive)
fhugdownloads:contents:utility_google_drive|> Utility ~ Google Drive
You may also want to synchronise customisations (Diagrams, Reports, Queries, etc) and Preference settings.
In which case use the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings plugin to Backup on one PC and Restore on the other, after synchronising the backup folder.

Re: Synchronising between PC with laptop
If you don't want to use Internet based solutions such as OneDrive, Google, Dropbox etc. then the easiest option is to work with an external USB Drive and a syncing utility such as Microsoft's own SyncToy 2.1 (mentioned in the Knowledge Base article above), FreeFileSync (a freeware application), or a dual pane file manager such as Free Commander.
SyncToy is relatively easy to set up once installed, FreeFileSync is a bit more complex; and File Managers are, of course, a continuously self-managed rather than an automated solution. For me, the beauty of running a local synchronisation utility is that you can copy all or a selection of documents/files between two or more computers without the need for continual Internet access. It also creates an additional external data backup.
