Change Font Styles

Post by goodwin2 » 09 Oct 2014 07:13

 Just installed new computer with Windows 8.1. Somehow programs don't transfer too well with previous settings - or is it that I am lacking some computer skills. Having used the same operating system for 10 years, the learning curve is quite pronounced.

Anyway have managed to get FH, v. 5.0.11 to look almost the same and changed most of the font styles and sizes to where I want them. I used the preferences for these. However cannot seem to find how to change top tabs: Individuals, Notes, Sources, Repositories, Submitters, etc., also for the Find address areas.

Am I missing something here as I don't know where else to look.

Any help gratefully accepted as am hoping that the frustration level can be significantly reduced ASAP.

What was your old Windows OS?

First of all, I hope you used the migration guide to transfer all your customisations, settings & preferences, including customised Diagrams, Fact Sets, Property Box Tabs, Reports, Queries, Plugins, etc, etc:
how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 Migration Guide,
which is part of:
how_to:reinstall_family_historian|> How to (Re-)install Family Historian.

However, beware that if you use that process now, then it will undo all your changed font styles and sizes by restoring them to your old PC settings. So take note of them beforehand and restore them afterwards.

Currently, those Records Window tabs, and other tabs, and all the icons and menus cannot be customised in FH regarding their font styles and sizes. They are determined by your Windows 8.1 font personalisation.

I think the items you are talking about, may be controlled by the windows setting for the font size (but I am not sure).

Thanks Mike and Jane for the response. My old operating system [a dinosaur but WELL liked by many still was Windows XP SP3. Frankly it was a lot easier to maneuver through than 8.1

Should have said I had a geek do the computer install and transfer of data from the old computer. He installed FH v. 5.0.11 [from the disc] but just to determine if my program would operate on Windows 8.1. Geeks are NOT inexpensive!

Would using "installation settings" wherever it is an option do the trick? I haven't really customized much in the program?

Won't touch a thing until I hear back. As you might imagine there are other tweaks, settings, etc. that I'm still working on with 8.1 I did have the geek do a classic shell which at least looks like Windows 7.

Thanks in advance. What would we do without Mike and Jane? Has anyone else thanked you lately?

In the v5 migration guide perform the penultimate two checks starting "On the new PC".

Use Help > About FH to check you have v5.0.11.

A newly installed FH program will default to the Installation Settings.

(That is why you would need to use the Plugin if you had customised FH on XP.)

Has your geek setup W8.1 to boot to the Desktop, bypassing the Start Screen?

Hi Mike,

Yes I do have FH v.5.0.11 but just realized that since it was a new install [data and backups were imported from the old computer] but my none of my plugins got carried over nor the custom queries. You mentioned that had I used the migration guide those things should have been transferred. So I will go back and get those added to my FH.

Yes the program boots from the program file or a desktop shortcut.

I did finally find a way to change font size in Windows 8.1 However, it does not seem to carry over to everything - didn't change the small size text in the tabs of FH. And yes, had to restart the computer for the changes to take place. So guess the changes that I was able to make with font selection in FH [pretty much satisfies me] will have to be it.

But changing the font size also got my solitaire game back to a bigger size. Getting the popular version of some games that previous operating systems had was also a bit of a nuisance.

So thanks again. Hope to get away from tweaking an operating system so can do some research again.

OK, so when you use the V5 Migration Guide only transfer the Plugin Backup folder from PC to PC.

(By default the Plugin uses your FH Default Backup Folder as defined in Tools > Preferences > Backup.)

BEWARE that if you use the Plugin Restore Registry Data Keys option, then it will undo your changed FH font styles and sizes by restoring them to your XP PC FH settings. So take note of them beforehand and restore them afterwards. (This does NOT affect the Win 8.1 font settings.)

If you choose NOT to Restore Registry Data Keys then certain settings are NOT transferred. There are workarounds for some of them described in the Plugin Help & Advice > F.A.Q.
