Once upon a time. I’ve migrated FH some time ago from an ageing desktop to a slightly less ageing laptop – no problems.
Fast forward to this week and having treated myself to a new shiny laptop (Windows 8.1) I went to the FH website and downloaded the latest version of FH to my new laptop.
Went to run Backup and Restore Settings on the old laptop (Windows XP) only to find a new version of the plugin. Well, all the better to have the latest version of things. Downloaded – sorted.
The Backup plugin run fine and I moved the resulting folder to a USB flash drive. USB in the new laptop, move the relevant folder to the new laptop and then run. It didn’t like the Version numbers. I hadn’t really noticed that in a lengthy lull in my family history research, the FH software Version had moved on.
My old laptop no longer as the capacity to connect to the net, so I downloaded the update from the FH website onto a USB flash drive and run it on the old laptop. Voila, all singing from the same hymn sheet – or not! (With no landline I’m currently using a dongle in the new laptop to access the net.)
The Backup run fine but when trying to restore, this is the error message I now get.
Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings Minor Version Mismatch
Minor Version Mismatch
ERROR: Family Historian backup Version 5.0.11.0 does not match Version 5.0.11.1 installed. Install a free upgrade so the program version matches the backup version to make them compatible
Old laptop and new laptop both show Version: 5.0.11
So there is obviously a difference between the install carried out on the new laptop and the upgrade given to the old laptop. I thought I’d end up with the same version of the software?
Install_fh5.0.11_dl.exe
upgrade_fh5_to_5.0.11.exe
I don’t won’t to make things worse, so thought I’d better ask the experts. What’s the safest way/correct way to sort it out?
Thanks
Salopian
Apologies if I don’t answer immediately – dongle and laptop my only internet access. I don’t carry it around with me!

Re: Transfer/Installation on new computer
Hello, I am the Plugin author.
Both versions of FH must be absolutely identical to ensure the backup data is compatible.
Calico Pie insist that the Plugin enforces this rule ruthlessly.
This requirement is stated in the Plugin's Help & Advice.
To see the FULL 4 digit FH Version, hold down the Shft key while using Help > About Family Historian.
Clearly install_fh5.0.11_dl.exe and upgrade_fh5_to_5.0.11.exe are different.
Also I suspect install_fh5.0.11_dl.exe is the 30-Day Free Trial so will only last a month.
So what were you planning to do then?
The solution is to use the SAME installation procedure on both PC.
So install V5 on Windows 8.1 following the how_to:family_historian_installation_details|> Family Historian Installation Details Flowchart.
You must use your last bought and paid for V5 full licence or the Upgrade V4 to V5.
Then you can install the latest free upgrade_fh5_to_5.0.11.exe.
Now both PC will be the same version and the Restore will work OK.

Re: Transfer/Installation on new computer
Hi
Before anything else, let me thank you for any plug-ins that carry your name. It's what makes FH special.
Anyway, suffice to say I'm confused. Easily done and I apologise if I'm not seeing the obvious.
My new laptop (Windows 8.1) has Version 5.0.11.1 I'm fairly sure I got this by downloading the 'Family Historian 5 (30 Day Free Trial) and using my reg key to legitimize. I don't recall downloading any updates.
On the old (Windows XP) laptop is Version 5.0.11.0 This has had the update applied to it but still is an older version than that achieved by downloading the 'FH5 30 Day...'
If the only way I can get the same version on both laptops is by downloading the '30 Day Free...' on the old one, then doesn't this do away with all my own settings? I think I'm screwed?
[Off to have a drink]

Re: Transfer/Installation on new computer
Since you have a full V5 licence registration key, you must have a full V5 installation CD/download that you originally installed on your XP PC.
So install that CD/download on Win 8.1 and update it to V5.0.11.0 then both will be identical.
If you have lost the download originally purchased from Calico Pie, you should be able to get a replacement by using the Knowledge Base installation advice.
If all the above fails then you will have to install the free trial on XP and trust that the settings are not upset. I think it should be OK but don't quote me.

Re: Transfer/Installation on new computer
Hi Mike
The day has dawned brighter, I'm back in a good mood.
Fortunately, despite having a new laptop, I'd not cleared all the downloads off the old XP laptop. Found the original install file for FH, so uninstalled FH off the new, applied the old install file and then the current update. Success! Both laptops showed the same Version. Used your most excellant plug-in and all was right with the world.
Thanks very much for the advice. I just need to find the time to return to family research and make use of both FH and the plug-ins.
Must order some more BMD certificates - that's a plan.
Thanks again
John
