My question is about the “Occupation” attribute in Narrative Reports, is there a simple step by step guide to changing the way that Occupation is shown when I use reports?

At the moment when I display or print a Descendent Report in the Occupation field it says “He was a” or She was a” but I would like (if I can) to change this to read just “Occupation” as I personally list all occupations in this field that I come across for this person and on some census returns where there is no occupation listed I use the word “None”

So if I have only found that person say in the 1861 census with no occupation given I would put None in the occupation field with the source listed as the 1861 census, but when you look at the Report for this person it reads “He was a None” so if I could change this to read Occupation it would then read “Occupation None” much better.

The Occupation field in tree’s is fine as it just says OCCU .

Ken, I have changed your posting to refer to Narrative Reports instead of charts (which are a form of tree Diagram).

The Sentence Template governs the text in all Narrative Reports.
Use Tools > Work with Fact Sets, select the Occupation attribute, and click the Properties button.
The sentence Template determines the text, so change it to Occupation {value} and click OK.

BTW:
I believe in tree Diagrams it actually says Occup: but you can change that if you wish by editing the Text Scheme.

Just to add to Mike's reply, you could opt to leave the default sentence format for use in most instances but change the sentence on a case by case basis, only when an individual’s occupation has been recorded as None. You can do this by clicking on the sentence field for the occupation in the individual’s Property box and editing the sentence there. This change will apply only to that particular occurrence of Occupation.

That is certainly an alternative, but Lorna forgot to mention that the Sentence box is only on the Facts tab of the Property Box.

You may also need to adjust the list of Occupations to get it to read appropriately.
Note that there are two value Template Codes namely {value} and {a/an value}.

BTW: Most FH users create a separate Occupation attribute entry for each Census or other Source.
This is done automatically if you use ancestralsources:index|> Ancestral Sources which offers a more efficient method of capturing Census and other key Events.
