Places in Narrative Reports

Post by Langbard » 01 Sep 2014 15:18

I've being trying out FH as a replace for The Master Genealogist as I'm concerned about the longer term viability of TMG. I've imported directly from my TMG project but I notice some issue with place names when running an Individual Narrative Report.

In the report I see for example "He lived at 39 between 1954 and 1962" - but when looking at the Fact Sentence in the Property Box I see that is correctly says "He lived at 39, School Lane, Standish, Lancashire between 1954 and 1962"

It isn't just an issue with one person as it occurs for lots of people, also sometimes the sentence is correct. Looking at the Residence Facts I cannot see any difference between the ones that produce truncation in the Narrative Report and the ones that don't.

If I look at the Individual Summary Report then all the Residence Facts look correct.

Can someone help me investigate and correct why why this is happening please.

In the Program help and the "getting the most out of Family Historian" search for "Place Formats". At present reports are limited to predefined "sets" which might suit some people, and although simpler in use, not as flexible as TMG.

I have no idea of the validity, or time frames, but from the odd hint I suspect PLACe formats will be much improved in the next version of FH.

I hope others may give you a more detailed "reasoned" response but this earlier thread might help (started by me, recently moved from TMG)
PLACe, ADDRess structure, level use-Lat/ Long from TMG

OK the thread is a bit long winded and some of it not relevant, so don't be put off, but gives a lot of novice info along the way.

This thread is mostly about GEDCOM import but has some info re PLACe fileds imported from TMG (in particular item 30 Jul 2014 16:13).
The Master Genealogist to be Discontinued

Hope you find FH of use, I do. One point I have complained about to FH is the lack of Plugin ability on the trial version. Plugins really extend the use of FH, so if you are on the free version, at least take a look at the scope of plugins.http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=plugins:index

If you have any other queries, don't hesitate to ask on the forum.

Family Historian sentences shorten place names for repeated place names, in your case having a comma after the house number means that the second occurrence is using just 39, rather than 39, School Lane, which is the part of the place before the first comma.

You can turn off this behaviour on the report options.

Personally I put only Places in the place field and use the address field for the street information, but that is a personal preference.

If you decide to purchase FH at some point it would be fairly simple to write a plugin to replace numbers followed directly by a comma to remove the comma, so you sentence would say "39 School Lane" on the repeats.

Thanks for that Jane, I hadn't spotted that there was a Report Options, and also that it was always the second occurrence that it was happening to. It's going to be a steep learning curve for me

yep, Jane's response is much more accurate and "reasoned" for your problem, hope my other info is good background.
