Family Historian User Group

Is there a way of producing a google world map (or similar) showing the locations of everyone in my family historian database. My family originated from a tiny village in Italy and there are now relatives all over the world. I would therefore like to produce such a map showing tags for all these locations based on the locations of events in people's lives.

I have looked at the Life events plugin, which I think produces one map showing the locations of the life events of one person only. I have looked at the Life Facts plugin, which produces lots of individual maps for each person selected.

Is there anything that could produce one map showing everyone's (or a selection) locations?

Could you please set your Family Historian Version so you don't have to tell us each time you post:
Click User Control Panel at the very top of this online page, then on Profile tab set the Family Historian Version at the bottom, and click Submit button.

It might be possible to modify those Plugins to plot all Places/Addresses on a world Google map, but it would be a very busy map if there are many locations, and you would have to zoom into each region to see the individual place markers.

You could try the fhugdownloads:contents:family_tree_analyzer|> Utility ~ Family Tree Analyzer download, which has a Google/OS Maps feature that probably gives you want you want. It worked quite well for my database.

After loading your GEDCOM file, use Maps > Run Google/OS Geocoder to Find Locations.
When complete use Maps > Show Timeline/Lifelines/Places to show markers on various map styles.
Use Maps > Show Timeline > Options > Disable Timeline Shows All Locations to show every marker.

It is also worth taking a look at https://www.findarecord.com/ admittedly you have to have your tree on FamilySearch but it does a great job of plotting your members on a map and shows their movement around the country.

I have just used FA Maps 'properly' for the first time, as per the above instructions. Wow! Half my wife's ancestors (born in the UK or Australia) show up in the US! Goes to show that you need to record a full address and place to make this work. I am now going through adding counties or states as required.
On a similar subject, what is regarded as the 'right' way to record addresses. Should one put "1 Smith Street" or "1, Smith Street"?
The first shows "1 Smith Street" in Part 1 on the Tools/Work with Data/Addresses, and the second just shows "1" in Part I and "Smith Street" in Part 2.
In neither case does a search for Smith Street find Smith Street. Can one search on Part 2?

There is no standardised 'right' way.
I use "1, Smith Street" along with an assumed content for each column.
The reason is that sometimes the house number is unknown, or is a house name, or is a building such as a church, school, business, etc.
Then the street/road will collate together whatever the number/name/building.

You can sort on any Address column, and can reverse the left/right order.

I am not sure what search you are using.

Address format (10149) may be worth a look.

More out of curiosity than anything else at the moment, I just tried running FTA on a copy of my FH GED file.

It seems to come up with a lot of errors or "not searched" entries, and the reason is obvious for some, but not for many others. I guess the key is understanding just how FTA is interpreting the Place and/or Address information, and then if this then conflicts in any way with either FH or any other programs or websites might use that information.
