Merging projects & keeping named list record notes

Mike thankyou for your work on the Export Gedcom Plugin. I think it will help me a great deal but
would like some input. I have maintained seven different FH project files due to one of them
requiring extra privacy which in the early days was not fully honoured by split tree helper. I have
merged them but only for occasional use such as to make a web-CD to display on my ipad. Long
term I would like to end up with one master project, but record notes within named lists have
always been my blocking point. I have just done one quick test of your Export Gedcom Plugin &
see all my named list record notes in the notes tab.

Am I correct in saying that for each current project I could run the plugin which would produce
a gedcom containing 'notes' rather than 'named list record notes'? I could then merge the
NOTES tab in the plugin gedcom back into the project file. Repeat for each project, then tackle
my normal merge process to create one master project, including media. Over time I could then
recreate my named list record notes as I want by cutting & pasting.
File root & flags are not as important to me but will be noted. Charts I have previously looked at
& most are held also as Pdf. Others I know I can recreate if I want as I have the text scheme
saved. Media I generally copy in & link at the end, probably for the reasons recently outlined in the KB
exporting gedcom with multimedia.

I'm not ready to do this yet, but have I covered all my bases?

The snag with the Named Lists and their exported Note Records is that they are associated to Individuals via their Record Id and after a Merge there is no guarantee that the imported Individuals will keep the same Record Id.

This is also the reason why Charts will not migrate from an imported Project to a merged Project.

However, in the case of Named Lists there may be a solution.
Use the Set Automatic Record ID Plugin attached to Jane's first reply to Keep saved chart on merge file (11094).
Ensure you choose a starting number bigger than largest Record Id in target Project.
Then use Tools > Work with Record Identifiers to generate new numbers.

Now when you Merge the imported Individuals should keep their Record Ids.

Assuming you Named Lists have unique names then one way to migrate them to the merged Project is to edit the GEDCOM file.

Use a plain text editor such as Notepad and copy & paste the desired _LIST section from one GEDCOM to the other.
The _LIST sections come before the first INDIvidual record and look like the following two lists:

Code: Select all

1 _LIST Named List One
2 _FLAG E
2 _NOTE List Note text
2 _IDS I103,I102
3 _NOTE Named List Note added to individual.
4 CONT This can spread over several lines.
2 _IDS I119,I115,I101
1 _LIST Named List Two
2 _IDS I127,I128,I140
3 _NOTE Note added to individual.
2 _IDS I147,I158,I190

If I had read back over the charts issue I would have been reminded of the crucial point about the record ID's.
If I follow through with this I will probably attempt using a text editor after ensuring I have uniquely named lists.
Thanks for your guidance.
