To Do Tab and shortcut button on toolbar

Post by autobyke » 05 Jul 2014 11:41

Hello,

I am finding difficulty try to follow the way to create a TO DO list. I have gone down the route suggested and it takes me so long.

Would it be possible to have an extra tab in the individuals records window for "TO DO" and a Shortcut button on the toolbar.

People could then enter their TO DOs in a separate window, in plain text. When preparing to do research, they could press the shortcut button and collate all of there TO DOs in one document and print them out. This would be a great help.

Thanks...Shaun

Hello Shaun.

First can you please click the User Control Panel at the top of this page, and on the Profile tab enter your Family Historian Version so it appears in the panel to the right of your posting. That helps us help you, as we know your FH Version.

I have moved this to the General Usage Forum because I believe it is something that FH already does offer (mostly).
These existing features should be explored before requesting new ones.

I presume you are talking about the how_to:create_work_in_progress_or_research_to_do_lists|> Create Work In Progress or Research To Do Lists.

In that article it explains how to Create Custom Tab and Create Custom Queries and Create Custom Report that should come very close to what you request (assuming you have FH V4 or V5).
It provides the Property Box TO DO Tab as requested.
It provides the Query/Report options via View > Custom Queries and Publish > Custom Reports, which although not a toolbar shortcut are very quick to invoke.

[POST EDIT]
I have just found your earlier posting Print details of a 'To Do' list (8430) which discusses the Named Lists Approach.
To utilise the features I mention above you need to use the Custom Attributes Approach.

HI Mike, thanks for your reply, I've been round the houses with the Custom Query option, with no success.

The Named List option works to some degree, but isn't exactly what I wanted.

Could the option I put in the wish list be considered for the future.

It would be so much easier for those of us who aren't familiar with computer programming.

Thanks...Shaun

Shaun, the Custom Query option will not work with the Named Lists Approach.

A Wish List entry will succeed best as follows:
  1. Provide a clear definition of exactly what will work for you.
  2. Explain why Named Lists don't satisfy your needs.
  3. Consider what the wider community would like.
Using the Named Lists Approach consider the following suggestions.

(1) Shortcut to the TO DO Named List
  • Create or Rename your Named List to be '* TO DO *' such that it is always the first one in the Named List pane.
  • Adjust the sizes of Named List Panes such that the Named List itself and the Records list at the top are short, and the Notes pane is as tall and wide as reasonably possible.
  • In the Records Window leave the Named Lists Pane button operated.
Now whenever you select the Records Window your '* TO DO *' list will appear with a large Notes pane, and you only need to choose the Individual Record for their Notes to appear.
I believe this satisfies your original request (which forgot to say how you wanted to choose the Individual Record).

(2) Shortcut to the TO DO Report
This already exists as Publish > Miscellaneous Reports > List Report > OK
(If there were a toolbar button for every popular Query, Report, etc, then it would become too cluttered.)

Could you perhaps explain in a bit more detail why the above does not satisfy your needs.
