Installing on Windows 8.1

I have just got a new computer with windows 8.1.64. For years I have been a keen user of Family Historian from Version 2.1.8, 2.2.1, then 3, then 4.

To date I have not purchased version 5 as the plan was to install what I had and then buy the update.

Unfortunately me new computer will not accept or run my old versions so now I am concerned what to do.

Can you please advise me if I should buy version 5 (not the update from 4) and if I did would it accept my saved project zip file?

I look forward to hearing from you

Thank you

Moira Meek

If you are going to buy the upgrade any way I would do that first as it makes the install much easier as you don't need to install any earlier versions just install the upgrade and enter both your V4 and V5 keys when prompted.

There is a detailed guide in our knowledge base how_to:reinstall_family_historian|Re-Install Family Historian

DON'T use your V4 backup, it's much better to copy the entire Project Folder to your new computer.

Thank you I shall get the upgrade and I have the version 4 cd and registration key.

I only have the saved backup of my project as my old computer 'died'!

Hope things can be done!

If you did not have any media attached, you will be fine, the version 4 backup does not include media, (the V5 one can). If you have your Documents folder backed up your Project should be on that backup.
