'Unable Save Changes on Windows 7

As it is all I really need for my purposes, I am still using FH V.3 (with updates)

I recently purchased a Windows7 laptop, but have been using FH for many years on my old machine.

I installed FH from my old CD and used the registration key with no problem.
I transferred all my files etc via my backup drive and everything loads perectly.

The problem is then whenever I try to save changes I get:-

"Unable save changes. Current file could not be renamed. Access Denied".

I have checked program files to make sure that 'read only' is unchecked and also I have made sure that in Windows Explorer 'hidden files folders' are checked.

The laptop is set up as Administrator so I can't see where the problem lies. In FH preferences I made sure that exactly the same boxes ( General, Start up, File Load/Save) are checked or unchecked as were in my old XP machine.

I have also checked out the info in the forum under 'Family Historian Program Folder' but that action doesnt help.

Any thoughts out there??????!

How do you open FH? Do you double-click its desktop icon or double-click your GEDCOM file?

What exactly is in Tools > Preferences > Startup > Default Startup File & Folder?

Check your GEDCOM file is not set with Read-Only access, which often happens when copying folders from another PC.
Check all the other copied files as well.

It may be an 'administrator problem'. Try the following:

find the shortcut you are using in the start menu; right click and select Run as Administrator.

If that solves the problem then you should go into the property box for the shortcut > Compatibility tab and tick Run this program as an Administrator.

It does mean that every time you run FH you will be asked to give permission for changes.

hi Tatewise.
thanks for reply.

I always double click Icon and files open ok.

My wife and I have two or three files and each time, I now see, they all keep going back to readonly!.
Also, as in my Windows XP details there is nothing showing in 'Default Startup File and Folder'

AND

HI DavidNewton

Yep tried the 'Administartor' trail but still not able to save files.

I was wondering folks whether to un/reinstall FH and see if that cures it.

Where have you copied your Gedcom/Project files to, please make sure you have not tried to store them anywhere other than Documents (later windows version are not at all keen on users doing that).

Also if you have any automatic backup systems installed try disabling them to make sure it's not that they are trying to grab the file before FH has finished with it.

Hi Jane

Oh, these new fangled versions of Windows!!!
I had transferred files to the 'users' part of W7 and that
is what caused the problem.
Now moved the files to Documents and yes it all works.

Thanks folks for all your prompt and concise replies.
