Display bugs in Books
Hi
There seems to be a display bug when creating a book.
With certain fonts and zoom levels, various titles and chart headings do not display properly (sometimes only on one page)
Examples are
- Chart heading is missing
- Spurious character added to end of fields, usually the character is a non keyboard one
- Full text of line does not display
Sometimes display can be corrected by changing zoom level, or changing font or by clicking the "goto page" button
There is a further problem in that it is not just the display, A PDF created from the book may also have a heading missing on one page. Recreating the book may "cure" this.
I am using Windows 7 and my book consists of a Title page, Index and several saved charts. The detail of the charts are correctly displayed. The problem is in the headings added by the book menu.
It is more noticeable if anything other than the default fonts and sizes are used, but it happens with default heading settings as well.
Am I the only one who has this? Any correction for it?

Re: Display bugs in Books
Welcome to the FHUG.
Please confirm you have FH V5.0.9 installed.
I presume you are talking about the Heading Level 1 text that appears in top left corner of first page of each Chart, and is the filename of the Chart. Its default Font is Arial Regular 24 pt Blue.
If the Book only consists of "Title page, Index and several saved charts" then where do the spurious characters and missing text appear?
Could you attach some screen-shots.
While displaying the Book, try using Printer Setup and selecting a different Printer such as Family Historian PDF.
If the problem mainly affects screen displays, and is usually OK in output Books, then check that your graphics display driver is up-to-date.

Yes, I have 5.0.9
Yes, I mean Heading 1 - sometimes does not appear on some charts but not others
Spurious characters appear at the end of the subtitle or author field - a single non keyboard character
or the field might only half display (first half of author or subtitle names only shown)
Default printer was already Family Historian PDF. However changing it to my physical printer doesn't stop the problem
Three examples below the larger one is single page and the smaller ones on two page display
Names are fictitious for this example
note the extra F, the extra u, and the part subtitle display
(no they haven't been typed in by accident)

Re: Display bugs in Books
By guesswork I determined your Font is Gabriola with which I can reproduce similar effects, both on the Tile Page and in Heading Level 1 Chart titles.
I have not tried all other Fonts, but the ones I have tried do not exhibit the problems.
Looks like a specific Font problem.

Thanks for the reply
The font used here was Gabriola on the Title page
However the spurious character problem appears with many other fonts eg Calibi or Candala and others.
The missing heading-1 can appear even with the default font Arial. I have left this as the default by the way but at 20 pt.
Shouldn't it work on every font and every size and every zoom level regardless, and if you can reproduce it isn't there a problem?

Re: Display bugs in Books
Yes, it should work on every font and every size and every zoom level, and yes I agreed there was a problem.
But try as I might with Calibri, Candara, and others, I can only reproduce the on-screen problems with the Gabriola font.
I cannot get the Header Level 1 problem with Arial 20 pt.
Also the Print Preview and PDF output are always OK even with the Gabriola font.
Have you visited your graphics display manufacturer's website and checked the driver is up-to-date?
Have you any display customisations such as Desktop right-click Personalize > Display > Medium - 125%?
If all else fails, then report the problem to support@family-historian.co.uk

Re: Display bugs in Books
Thanks
Display was set to Medium 125%, I changed it to 100% but it made no difference. I've changed it back.
Drivers are the latest, I've just checked. I've tried various compatibility modes etc by the way.
I think I'll have to report it or live with it.
Thanks again.
