Installing FH on new coputer

Post by GrahamAB » 08 May 2014 14:19

I have just purchased a new computer with Windows 7 installed. I have the FH3 disc which is not installed at the moment. Should I install FH3 and then download the FH5 update or is it easiest to purchase the new FH5 disc straight away.

You cannot purchase a V4 to V5 Update because you only have V3, so it will have to be a full V5 licence.
No need to install V3 beforehand.
See how_to:index#installation_guide|> Installation Guide for full details.

But you can install V5 on both old and new PC to simplify transfer of customisations using a Plugin, as explained in the KB link above.

Just to add you don't need to buy a disk unless you want the printed booklet, you can just install the 30-day free trial and then purchase a "download" licence.

I would advise the following actions.

1) Ensure the latest FH V5.0.9 is installed on both PC.

2) Convert your existing V3 data to a V5 Project on old PC. This is most important if your data has linked Multimedia photos or documents, to simplify the transfer to new PC.

3) Download Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings plugin to both PC. Checkout its Help and Advice, then use Backup option on old PC.

4) Copy your V5 Project and Backup folder from old PC to new PC.

5) Use plugin to Restore the backed-up customisations.

Study the Knowledge Base advice for FH especially on Projects, and Installation, and ask if anything is not clear.
