Reports - formatting list of sources

Hi, I'm a newbie, so please go gently.

In a Descendants by Generation report, the list of Sources at the end is causing problems. When the reference number reaches 100, the text is pushed down to the line below instead of appearing alongside. This looks poor and takes up unnecessary space.

Is there a way to prevent it? I've tried tinkering with measurements in the Report Options > Page Layout tab, but can't find a way to fix this particular feature. Sorry if this has been asked before.

I don't get that problem. Have you tried resetting the options back to the installation settings (on each of the tabs)? Also check that you are running Family Historian 5.0.9 (the latest free update).

Thanks for replying, and I've done as you suggest. I've downloaded the update. When I revert to the Installation Settings the problem is resolved. But those settings have the Section Data formatted as Times New Roman 10pt, which is too small for my main text. When I increase to 11pt or 12pt, the problem comes back. I guess I need to experiment with different fonts and sizes?

Try also increasing the Tab sizes and column widths when you increase the font.

Thanks, but changing tabs and column indents doesn't seem to affect my Sources list. I get the same problem with any font larger than 10pt. I suppose I can save as .rtf and edit in Word, but it's strange that no-one else has this problem.

I have had a bit of a play and it does not seem possible to change the width of the Source reference column, by selecting a narrow style font you can adjust it. I'll flag it with Calico, but no one had mentioned it before and it looks like it's been the same since V2.

As you say, there are a couple of 'condensed' fonts where you can go up to 11pt, but no higher without getting this problem. The main body of my reports need to be 12pt in an easily readable font, so it looks like I will have to edit in Word. Perhaps it is a Windows 8.1 problem? Thanks very much for looking anyway.

I'm experimenting here and you try this at your own risk. Assuming your Windows drive is C: open the following file in your favourite text editor, I use Notepad++ but I'm sure Notepad will do fine

C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Famly Historian\Reports\Standard\Descendants by Generation.fhr

This is a settings file for the Descendants by Generation report. Using find look for the line beginning _Para Indent and change the value to 400. (I think the default is 350) Save the file (you will probably have to close Family Historian before doing that) and then change the Section Data font to Times New Roman 12pt. On my system that solves the problem.

That certainly works, but I would advise saving it in the Custom folder NOT the Standard folder.

Then it can be used via Publish > Custom Reports > Descendants By Generation or whatever name you choose.

That makes sure that the new indent is immune from any updates to FH or the Standard Report being reset to Installation Settings.

I just did this, following your instructions above, and it worked. Thank you both so much, greatly appreciated. :D

I find that I have the same outcome. I use Ariel 10 (Times New Roman reminds me too much of work!) and from source 100 the lines drop. Using Ariel Narrow - no problem.
I experimented by narrowing the margins at both sides, but no difference.
It seems to be a page width thing, picking up the extra character.

No Roger, it is a paragraph indent problem.

The fixed indent is too narrow for large fonts especially when the Source number exceeds 99.

The Report Options dialogue allows the font to be changed but not the paragraph indent.
The workaround above permanently increases the paragraph indent to allow larger fonts and numbers.

I see. I managed to work through the change and all is good. Have saves in Custom Reports.

Thanks for reporting this. It will be fixed in the next upgrade. That is to say - if the source number is larger than the current indent, the source text will just shift right appropriately rather than starting on the next line. Also you will be able to change the paragraph indent for the source text in Report Options.
