FH CD-DVD viewing on ipad

I have successfully displayed an FH5 created CD-DVD on my ipad mini retina.
This is essentially displaying a website locally without web or cloud access.
Presumably there are other solutions, but I came across FileApp for IOS used in conjunction with DiskAid for windows PC or MAC.

My initial test was with the small sample project, & then I used a file with 1400 individuals & 100 photos, a descendant report, an ancestor report & a pdf.
It displayed easily so hopefully could also handle larger files with more media.
The only difference I noticed was no text change of colour that you see with mouse hovering.
I did not succeed with CD's created by earlier versions of FH presumably because they lack the document to start.

FileApp is free with charges only for add-ons not required here.
DiskAid does not require registration or purchase for the browsing & transfer of files as required here.
It mentions trial mode with limited numbers of imports for other purposes which you would then need to purchase DiskAid.

I didn't find any of the help particularly helpful & nearly gave up. DiskAid offers either wifi or USB transfer similar to itunes function.
From DiskAid you will see a Storage folder which includes Apps, Documents, FileApp & Media.
For FH purposes ignore other folders such as Photos, Contacts etc - using them will ultimately require paying.
Documents allows USB style storage but files are not visible on your idevice so dont use that for FH.

Just drag & drop your entire FH CD-DVD folder into the FileApp folder within the storage folder that you see from DiskAid.
The FH CD-DVD folder comprises data folder, autorun, fh icon, load & start.
When you open FileApp on your ipad, tap the Files folder which should now contain your FH CD-DVD folder.
Tap it & then tap the start document.
Your CD will display as it does on your PC!

If someone else would like to try this out, maybe they could capture screen shots as they go?
The greatest difficulty is avoiding the folders that you don't require, but hopefully what I've written will help.

That sounds really useful, and if other users think likewise, then perhaps a Knowledge Base article on how to use the tool-set would be worth writing.

Well Done ejp :D

I tried back in 2010 and again in 2012 to get a CD creation of FH to work on an iPad. I was successful on Android phone but could never get it to work on an iPad.

As I said back then if people could get the CD DVD version of FH to work on an iPad why would they need a separate App for their gedcom file to run in some fashion.

I didn't have any trouble following your instructions, other than having to find a copy of DiskAid from the internet rather than looking in W8 Apps

I would have thought the only screen shot you would need is locating FileApp in the DiskAid desktop view.

Thank you

..... I have come across a small glitch, but not critical.
Some addresses (not all) recorded against facts are being coloured as if they are clickable links.
This colouring also extends into the next field.
eg Williams Rd against a birth is OK but 33 Centre Rd for Electoral Roll has been given 'link' text colouring, which also extends into the next Electoral Roll field.
IOS seems to be wanting to create an event/calender entry, which can be ignored. The next Electoral roll is OK presumably because the preceding address did not have a number.
I only noticed this after a test with a prominent link colour.
It also happens in the descendant report....

I have found the same on my iPad. It also happens with the Evernote plugin. Anything like a date or an address and it wants to use it for a calendar or contacts entry. It doesn't get anywhere but it is sometimes a bit irritating, I have looked through the IOS set up to see if auto collection of dates and addresses can be disabled but have not managed to find anything.

I use the very flexible free app Documents 5 by Readdle on both iPhone (3GS running iOS 6) and iPad (2 running iOS 7) for viewing many kinds of files synchronized from my PC. I've just synced an FH CD-DVD folder via Dropbox (many other methods available) and can just click on e.g. index.html in the data subfolder. Everything seems to be viewable on the iPad, the same as on the PC, including large versions of thumbnails, and other images. All the links work OK, and no inappropriate links are being generated. The only problem is that the buttons on a full-size image, e.g. Close, don't work.

Since I use Dropbox and already have a copy of Readdle Docs from my previous experimenting I have had another go at using it.
After struggling with getting the CD/DVD files either opening in Readdle from Dropbox or to transfer them into Readdle. I tried downloading the FH CD folder direct into Readdle via DiskAid and it works from clicking the Start.html icon from the FH CD folder, no need to go into the data folder.

It all appears to be working as you would expect from a windows pc, including opening the thumbnails into large images and closing them with the "Close X" button. There is no erroneous highlighting of dates or addresses either.

I have to say that transferring folders /files via DiskAid is a lot easier and quicker than using iTunes.

That works well, thanks.
From free DiskAid on PC, drag & drop FH CD-DVD folder into Readdle Documents 5 app & tap Start file.
