Publish - Create a CD DVD
I am working through the Knowledge Base and Forum articles about creating CD/DVD /website and have a couple of queries:
1) Having reached the end of the wizard and closed it, is it possible to carry out further editing/improving at a later date, perhaps by re-opening the wizard? I cannot find a way to do this and it is quite frustrating having to start from scratch each time.
2) The help section 'Tips, tricks and pop-ups' includes a section about creating Diagram Hyperlinks PDF. The details imply that one can save a pdf document, eg FH chart, with coloured fonts or boxes, but I cannot get it to save in anything other than black text on white background even though the FH chart has coloured fonts and some coloured boxes. I have tried using the chart saved as .png in the wizard but fonts in the resulting document are rather blurred, see attached jpegs from the CD/DVD website creation.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Re: Publish - Create a CD DVD
1) You cannot run parts of the Wizard, but it is possible to modify the files in the CD/DVD/website folder. However, you need to understand how the files interact with each other. For example you could replace the Diagram PDF file with an improved version.
You can make the Wizard create its output much faster by selecting a tiny but representative subset of Individuals at Step 2, and when the output is satisfactory revert to the original full selection for the final run.
2) The usual reason for black & white only printed output is in the Diagram > Options > Print tab the Print text, lines and boxes in black-and-white only option is ticked.
(Remember PDF output uses the Family Historian PDF printer driver.)
However, that option is ignored for JPEG, PNG, etc graphic image file output as they do not use a printer.
Alternatively have you altered the Family Historian PDF printer Properties?
A single page PDF does usually give a better detail resolution than a JPEG, and a JPEG cannot have hyperlinks.
It would help if you could give more precise details of the commands you use, and what "further editing/improving at a later date" you want to achieve.

Re: Publish - Create a CD DVD
Many thanks for your very helpful advice.
1) I have now successfully substituted one pdf for another improved version
2) You were right, for some reason I had change the diagrom options to black and white - I must have done it in the last few weeks and have absolutely no recollection, which is rather worrying.......
Further editing and improving - I had wanted to write an introduction, acknowledgements etc as per the options when producing a book. I have got round the need to retype them each time I start again, by putting them into a document and saving it as pdf, so it is no more onerous than adding charts.
The key need for me is to plan, work out exactly what I want to do and produce all relevant documents before I start, whereas I lazily tend to do a bit, review the results and make changes. Now I have assembled everything I need it is quite easy.
A couple more queries:
3) I would like to attempt to create hyperlinks to boxes in charts and an index that includes wife names. I tried to run the plug in whilst in the wizard but nothing seemed to happen, neither did it when I tried to create the hyperlinks in the report in FH - it implied that it had changed 2 records but I couldn't see any difference. So at what stage of the process should I do this?
4) Nothing really to do with FH - I saved a Word doc as pdf for inclusion in the CD/DVD. On clicking it in the CD, it opens in Adobe but the text (originally Arial) is distorted and there is a message that the Adobe file might not have opened correctly. It invites me to open in another viewer and selecting IE produces a perfect result. (The Adobe file is opening in my Mozilla browser). Any idea what might be happening?

RE: introduction, acknowledgements, etc.
I presume the Step 5: Create Home Page for Welcome Text is unsuitable for you.
This option should remember whatever you enter between runs of the Wizard.
I guess that instead you are using Step 4: Add Items for ToC and the Gedcom File or Other Download option for the PDF document.
3) The Improve Website or CD DVD HTML Plugin must be used only after completing the Wizard.
The Plugin operates on the Wizard output folder, which is completely overwritten on each run, so any earlier changes would be lost.
This Plugin's Index of Names tab will add women's Married Surnames as one of its options.
Similarly, the Hyperlinks / Text tab will convert hyperlinks in Reports not handled by FH.
You say you want "to create hyperlinks to boxes in charts". I am not sure what you mean, but suspect it is not possible.
Do you mean Diagrams with Boxes that have Hyperlinks to their Individual Report pages?
If so see how_to:make_family_tree:diagram_hyperlinks_pdf|> Family Tree Tips ~ Diagram Hyperlinks PDF.
But this is only really effective for web sites, and not so good for CD/DVD, because if you send the CD/DVD to someone else you won't usually know their drive letter.
4) PDF Document Problems.
I presume you use the Word option to Save As PDF. The fact that it is OK in IE suggests it is a Mozilla problem.
However, you could try the Options and set ISO 19005-1 compliant (PDF/A) to include font details.
By Mozilla do you mean Firefox? If so try using its Tools > Options > Applications tab and set the Adobe Acrobat Document to Use Adobe Reader.
But remember if you send the CD/DVD to someone else, any documents will open using their default browser.
So you need to test it with a variety of browsers, &/or know the recipient's browsers, &/or provide setup instructions.

Re: Publish - Create a CD DVD
Many thanks again.
Yes, my introduction is too long to fit into the 'Welcome Text', I want to include Intro, Acknowledgements as per the book I produced previously.
3) I have now created the married surnames in my index.
As you suspected, I was talking about Diagrams with Boxes that have Hyperlinks to individual report pages - I have looked at the instructions supplied but I think I will leave this for another time, especially as I will be producing a cd - or rather putting the cd/dvd file into my dropbox account and inviting my relatives to look at it. There will be several charts with more details for them to view as well as reports so I don't think its a big issue.
4) I have changed Mozilla tools/options/applications to Adobe Reader and it works perfectly, I will add a note re this or the use of different browsers.

Re: Publish - Create a CD DVD
As far as I am aware there is no limit to the size of the Welcome Text but its formatting capabilities are rather limited.
You are correct, the Diagram Box Hyperlinks technique probably would NOT work via Dropbox.
Beware that the CD/DVD content is not one file, but a whole folder of many files that must be placed in Dropbox.
I would omit the autorun.inf and fh.ico files from Dropbox.
Then your relatives will need to get the load.exe and start.html and the data folder of files onto their PC.
If they use your Dropbox account then that works automatically, otherwise if you have granted Private Read Only access to those files, then I suspect they have to copy them all manually.
Then running either load.exe or start.html should open the FH Welcome page.
Another idea that you might like to explore is to simply put a copy of your whole Project into Dropbox.
Then your relatives could install the FH 30-day free trial and have the full FH experience under your tuition.

Re: Publish - Create a CD DVD
Thanks for your advice re Dropbox and my CD. I must confess that I had assumed that readers would just be able to open the file - yet another indicator of how little I know about things electronic.
I tried transferring the documents on my Android tablet - too much like hard work, and also asked my sister to try and open/move the documents but she found it too complicated to bother.
So in the end I saved all the Reports as .pdf documents, to add to the Charts I had already saved, and put them all in a folder on Dropbox to be viewed like any other set of documents. I also created an index of names complete with father, mother and spouse names so that they could follow people through, if desired. Seems to work very well for people who are not all that interested in family history (even when it is their own).
Your help with producing the CD was not wasted as I have created one to put in my own archive for posterity, together with the ged file. In the (hopefully) dim and distant future my executors will be able to see what is on the CD and decide whether or not to import the ged file into a family history programme - always assuming I have periodically checked whether I need to transfer it to another CD, or whatever medium is appropriate at the time.
Thanks again for all your help.
