Browsing All Persons in Project by Focus Window

Post by woods4thetrees » 25 Feb 2014 12:20

Hello again; I have another query please,

Is there a way to browse/view focus windows for one person after another within a project by just clicking a "Next" type button? I want to use something of this nature to spot possible relationships between people who are currently "Unrelated" and I find the records window too unwieldy to do this with. :?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

You can select any Individual Record in the Records Window, or a Diagram, etc, and then click the Focus icon in the toolbar near top left.

If your monitor screen is big enough you can even open two instances of Family Historian side by side and see two Focus Windows at the same time.

However, it begs the question: How did those "Unrelated" people get into your database?
When adding any Individual or Fact it should be supported by a Citation to a Source Record as evidence.
Then you can answer questions such as: Why is this person in my database and where did I get the information?

If you think you may have Individuals duplicated in your data, then there is a Plugin to help you find them: Find Duplicate Individuals.

How do you open 2 instances of Family Historian at the same time?

Just repeat whatever you did to open the first instance - click an icon on the desktop, or from the start menu.

You will need shrink each window down to roughly half the screen, or one will hide behind the other.

Yes, it is just the same as having two copies of MS Word, or two Internet browser windows open together.

Thanks very much Mike,
I see that the "next" and "previous" arrows in the Focus window work nicely once the focus option has been selected for several persons from inside the Records Window.
The reason I have unrelated individuals is that I am doing a student assignment: I am searching for all possible family members from within two adjoining parishes (& possibly others) for the period 1720 to 1820. I am adding all the citations as I go.
As I haven't yet collected all the P/R entries that I need, I am using the "Assoc" tab to make a note of possible duplications per your earlier suggestion until I have gathered more information.
That Plug In to Find Duplicates will probably be very useful shortly!
Thanks again,
Steph

Thanks very much both of you.
I cannot open more than one instance using the icon, but I've found that I can open the second copy from the program on the start menu, and I can open more than one copy by going to the start menu rather than using the icon.

I suddenly realised in the middle of the night that to open a second Word document etc I would click on the right mouse button - once I did that the second copy of FH opened from the icon - talk about a dimbo!
Found it very useful yesterday when I was comparing the formats for two types of report, so thanks again for you help.
