Updating from Xp to Windows 7.
I have a Windows Xp Laptop with Family Historian 4.1 installed & loaded with a large amount of data. Microsoft say they will not be supporting Xp with security updates etc after April 2014. I have purchased a new Windows 8 Laptop and wish to transfer my Historian program with it's data from the Xp machine to the Windows 8 machine. The raw data is already transferred using the "Windows Easy Transfer Program". My question is: will Family Historian 4.1 load / run on a Windows 8 machine? If not what is the most economical way of updating Historian 4.1 so that it will run on Win.8?
Thanks for any comments on this. Adjer.
Additional comment; Thanks to everyone for the help. This is a lot to digest & I need to try to make sense of it all before I do anything further.Adjer.

Have you reviewed the detailed document in the knowledge base?
how_to:reinstall_family_historian|re-Installing Family Historian
V4 should run, to upgrade to V5 simply purchase a V4-V5 upgrade from My History or the Family Historian Main Site

Re: Updating from Xp to Windows 7.
Calico Pie say that all versions of FH will run on Windows 8.
See http://www.family-historian.co.uk/suppo ... -questions under Do all previous versions of Family Historian run on Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP.
You may also need to transfer your custom settings for Diagrams, Queries, Reports, etc, etc...
See how_to:move_settings|> Move Family Historian Settings & Projects.
But note that the folders that hold these settings are completely different on XP and Windows 8.
See glossary:family_historian_program_data_folder|> Family Historian Program Data Folder.

Sorry to but in on this thread but I have spent the last hour trying to find the FH Progam Data file on Windows 8. All I need is to find the file with icons for diagrams!

See the advice in glossary:family_historian_program_data_folder|> Family Historian Program Data Folder about revealing hidden folders, which may involve slightly different option settings in the File Explorer of Windows 8 but the concepts should be the same.

Thank you Jane. Just what I needed.
Mike, I tried, I really did but couldn't find them.

Edit to say: Mike I've done it! I committed the serious error of trying to do something new under time pressure. With no pressure this morning it was easy! Thanks both for all your help.

Anne, I have updated the glossary:family_historian_program_data_folder&#notes|> Program Data Folder - Notes with more details, especially for Windows 8.
Could you see if that helps reveal the hidden folders.

Yes, Mike, I think that's helpful. What stumped me yesterday was where to BEGIN looking for the Hidden Files tick box. All sorted now, thanks.

Re: Updating from Xp to Windows 7.
Hello again,
Historian 4.1 now installed in the new Win8.1 laptop and linked to the three family trees I transferred from the old Win.XP machine. It was quite easy to do in the end apart from the long wait (several hours) while the transfer took place. I am not sure if the F.H 4.1 I have installed from disc is the final version that is in the Xp laptop. I looked on the Historian site & could not see how to update to the the latest version. I now have to learn how to use the Windows 8.1 laptop properly. Thanks for the help from those above. Adjer.

Have you tried Check for Updates, which is on FH's Help menu?

Re: Updating from Xp to Windows 7.
On the old computer, click on Help/About from the menu that will show what version you have.
Do the same on the new computer.
If they are different you can download the last V4 update from the download archive on the FH site.
