Bulk adding data to Family Historian

Post by craigmollekin » 15 Dec 2013 02:34

Hi,

I'm hoping some clever person here might have a suggestion for me.

I am currently extracting lots of names and dates etc from a collection of gravestones that I have photographed. Currently, I simply add the data into Family Historian but I am finding this to be quite a time consuming process.

I was thinking of adding the data to a spreadsheet or text document and then somehow importing that data into Family Historian or converting it into a Gedcom which I would then import into F.H.

I was also thinking about writing the actual Gedcom with the data; into a prepared Gedcom template where I just add the names and dates. But adding the relationships looked very time consuming and so not really making the process any quicker for me?

So, in short, is there anyway in which I might be able to bulk add data?

Craig,

For my own and a few friends use I have written an Excel to Gedcom converter. The data must be in a certain order and there are template spreadsheets available to use. If it doesn't do quite what you want let me know and I may be able to tweak it for you.

Details here.

Thank you, Colin.

I was looking at your website only a couple of days ago. I think what you have created is amazing, but I noticed the limitation of relationships. Details on my photographed headstones would need to be linked to the relationships included on them. Is there a way around this? (I appreciate such a request/task is easier said than done).

Kind Regards,

Craig

There is already a sample plugin to do CSV import. The idea is you customise it to create the fields you need on import.

It's much easier than creating GedCom from scratch as FH will prevent you from doing any invalid imports.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jane. I'm struggling with it at the moment, but it does look like a good idea.

Craig,

If you want me to look at doing a bespoke / updating the web app for you email me a sample spreadsheet. I have recently done some custom ones for someone in Germany and another for some Dutch records.
