Chart Editing

Post by raywigz » 22 Nov 2013 15:19

Hi
Is it possible to force a line break in an ancestor box chart information.
For instance I am getting breaks within date formats such as '5 Feb' on one line and the year on the next. If it's possible to force a line break before the '5' it would look so much better.

Thanks
Ray

You cannot force a line break in quite the way you are requesting, but there are some options.

First it would be wise to use the Diagram Options > Text tab and Clone your current Text Scheme.

Now Edit the custom clone and choose Date Format: Abbrev(3) at the top, which uses the format dd/mm/yyyy so it cannot break across a line.

Another method would be to Clone each Item Used and put the Date in a separate Template from the rest of the line, and tick the Start on New Line and Group with previous line as necessary.

A third way would be to simply make the boxes wider.

I have been trying the options, but when text scheme is set to all events and notes (which gives me the details I want in the boxes) the date format does not change from compact.
Using a different text scheme does allow the date format to change to Abbrev(3) but dd/mm/yyy is not good. Would much prefer dd/mmm/yyyy. Is there a way to have all events and notes with say just the year?

If you want all dates in the text scheme to be displayed as just the year, simply select year in the Date Format menu in Edit Text Scheme.
Otherwise, start by selecting the date format you want for most of the items and then edit the format for the items where you want just the year. Select the item in the list of items used and click Edit. Then within the template for that item, change the date format to DATE:YEAR%

Another approach, as Tatewise says, is to increase the maximum box width, on the Dimensions tab of Diagram Options. However, that can cause problems of another kind if the diagram is large and space is an issue.

Unfortunately, the special All Events and Attributes(, and Rec Notes) Text Schemes do not seem to honour any Date Format setting at the top of the Text Scheme Edit window, which always reverts to Compact.

I am tempted to suggest that may be a bug that should be reported to Calico Pie Support.

Thanks for the suggestions
I have more or less sorted the layout by playing with the 'Notes'. Probably not ideal, but it gives me what I wanted in this particular chart, and as it's a separate tempory gedcom from my main data file it wont matter if the entries are inconsistant.

Thank you 'Tatewise' for confirming the problem with 'All Events and Attributes(, and Rec Notes)' Text Schemes not allowing any Date Format setting changes. Glad it wasn't just my error.

Thanks
Ray
