Transfer data PC to PC
I've just visited France to meet a cousin-I-never-knew-I-had (but that's for another time!) - I brought my FH5 up to date from all her information on the French side of the family on my laptop and now want to integrate it onto my PC at home. How do I do that?
Many thanks!
Many thanks!

Re: Transfer data PC to PC
Hi 2zannah - There are several options. I assume FH V5 is also installed on your home PC.
Probably you can use the same method you used to transfer the Project from your home PC to the laptop initially.
I will assume you have adopted the FH V5 Project structure.
This is the case if Family Historian Project is displayed on the top border, and your Project is listed in the File > Project Window.
On the laptop use File > Backup/Restore > Full Backup and save the .zip file onto a USB pen drive memory stick.
On the home PC use File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup from the .zip file on the USB pen drive memory stick.
You will have to choose a slightly different Project Name for this restore.
See glossary:backup_and_recovery|> Backup and Recovery for more details.
If you are happy that this new Project is simply a superset of your home PC old Project then after backing up this old Project you can use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Delete Project to remove old Project.
Then use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Rename Project to change the name of the new Project to match the old one.
However, if since copying your home PC old Project to the laptop you have updated both the home PC Project and the laptop Project then you will need to use File > Merge/Compare File.
If you need advice on how to use this then please ask.
To avoid these problems in future, you can synchronise your two PC via the Internet so both Projects are kept in step.
See the fhugdownloads:contents:dropbox|> Utility ~ Dropbox or fhugdownloads:contents:microsoft_skydrive|> Utility ~ Microsoft SkyDrive for further details, and post any questions you have here.

Hi Tatewise - thank you so much for this. Really appreciate it and will get on to it right away!
Re: Transfer data PC to PC
Hello again tatewise. I've finally managed to find the time to address this issue but when I look at the project on the laptop it doesn't say Family Historian Project on the top border, but The Family including France.ged – Family Historian Gedcom – [focus window] so when I try to use File>Backup/Restore I only get the Small backup option available to me.
Sorry to be a nuisance, and many thanks again for your help.

Re: Transfer data PC to PC
The explanation is that it is not a Project but a standalone GEDCOM file.
I suspect that you did not copy the entire Project folder from your home PC onto the laptop PC.
You probably only copied the GEDCOM file The Family including France.ged and did not create a Project.
I assume you have not updated or added any multimedia image files?
In this case you need to copy the GEDCOM file The Family including France.ged back to your home PC.
Make sure you have a good Full Backup of your home PC Project.
Then use File > Merge/Compare File from the home PC Project to incorporate the The Family including France.ged file.

Many thanks Mike, all neat and tidy now. Next job is finding out how to upload much of it onto Ancestry.co.uk. Will start by searching these forums.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
