all data lost?

Post by barbaramac » 16 Nov 2013 01:41

My computer crashed last week, the technician did what he thought would save my Family Historian but I can't load it even though I had saved it to external hd.also on a usb stick. I have managed to find one file which shows 6921 individuals in my tree (this is on a baby computer (7inch) I know I had somewhere in the count of 7262 or 7626 individuals. The family Historian Support have re-sent the emails for the V4 and upgrade V!5 to reinstall, but before I do that I am wondering how I can get the information I had on the tree before it crashed...anyone here know? To do a full install from the V5 upgrade I need to uninstall all versions of FH first I am hoping I can retrieve the data I had.
Sorry if this is not on the correct forum. To make it a bit harder the technician also upgraded computer to windows 8 as I was using Vista before!

This the correct forum for your problems.
Be assured that un-installing or installing FH will NOT affect your Project GEDCOM data.
This is because the FH program is quite separate from your GEDCOM data.

TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM PLEASE ANSWER AS MANY OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS AS POSSIBLE.

If I understand correctly, you believe you had saved your Project GEDCOM data onto an external HD and USB stick before the PC crashed.

Can you describe the folders & files you have saved.
Are they FH Backup .ZIP files created when you exited FH or by the File > Backup/Restore > Backup option?
Are they a copy of the My Documents\Family Historian Projects folder ?

Exactly what are you doing to try and load this Project GEDCOM data from external HD/USB stick ?

Exactly what are you doing on the baby computer to examine your data ?
What type of computer is this ?
Is it running FH ?

Let this be a warning to anyone else reading this thread, that they make sure they have good backups an know how to use them.
