Diagram with step-mother family included

Post by sgauntlett » 05 Oct 2013 21:50

I'm struggling to create the diagrams I need.
One I'm trying to create for my son of his ancestors, I want to include both wives of his grandfather - obviously one natural and one step-family. I've tried to associate two sets of parents to my wife to try and get this included but that didn't work. When I add a second diagram, boxes are repeated and the two diagrams seem unconnected.
With the same family, I wanted to do a descendant chart from the man with children from two different marriages. How can I do a simple diagram with them all?
Have I missed some options somewhere or should I be requesting better support for complicated families in future versions of FH?

To include extra relations it is often necessary to select a Family couple instead of an Individual as the Diagram Root.
See how_to:view_both_spouses_ancestors|> View Both Spouses’ Ancestors for details.

So in the case of grandfather with two wives, select the natural grandfather & grandmother Family couple and choose an All Relatives Diagram.
This should show all their ancestors, and descendants including you and your son.
It should also show the step-grandmother and her descendants, but NOT her ancestors.

In the case of your wife's natural parents and step parents, it is not simple to show both on the same diagram.
The best solution is to first choose say an All Relatives Diagram that will involving the natural parents of your wife, because by default only the 1st parents of any individual are shown.
Then select your wife in the Diagram and use Diagram > Insert into Diagram > Ancestor Tree (or Ancestors & Descendants Tree) and select her step-parents from the options given.
This will show the step-parents family tree with your wife's box duplicated and linked by a coloured ribbon to her original box.
If there is room you can drag this step-family tree into a space on the original diagram, but you may have to move some of the original boxes to make room, and still result in crossing lines.
You can move this step-family tree way off to the edge of the original tree, and if you wish, remove the coloured ribbon by using Diagram > Options and untick Check for duplicates.

In the case of the man with children from two marriages, select the Individual man and choose a Descendants Diagram.
This should include both wives and all children.

There is Wish List 501 Entire Pool Diagram that offers to solve all the above problems - please Vote for it.

Thanks Mike. I will give those tips a try and have added my vote for the feature. I think it would definitely help with creating diagrams that are strife with family politics.
