Hi,
I am a new user to Family Historian, having downloaded V5 about a week ago. I brought in a GEDCOM from Ancestry UK and when when I run Ancestor by Generation reports without adding any further info there seems to be no issue, I can generate the report with no problems. However, if I update a particular ancestor's record in the Properties box by trying to add a missing marriage date etc, then try to run the Ancestor's by Generation report again I get the following error message:
Error: Access Violation at 06B5D8757 (tried to read from 0x00000004, program terminated. LastCP is 'RF'.
I would be grateful if someone can help, and advise what I can do to ensure that the program functions correctly, without producing the present error.
FH does look a great program, and I am really looking forward to learning more of the features it has, so I would be really grateful if someone can help, and advise what I can do to ensure that the program functions correctly, without producing the present error.
Regards,
Alan

Re: Access Violation - Cannot enter marriage dates
Very strange, I have not seen this reported before, FH is normally one of the most stable programs I know.
I think the first thing I would do is run the validation over the imported file (File>Validate), to see if there is any corruption in the file.
Another thing to try is to change the default printer for your PC to the Family Historian PDF printer. FH talks to the printer driver when laying out reports and diagrams and occasionally poorly written printer drivers can cause unexpected errors.

Re: Access Violation - Cannot enter marriage dates
Hi Jane,
Thanks for the quick reply. As suggested I validated the imported GEDCOM and everything was fine, with no errors. I then changed the printer to the FH Pdf printer as recommended.
I am still a bit confused as the error message I reported in my first post seems to be somewhat intermittent. I am not getting it all the time. By way of example I have just added a marriage date for one set of my wife's 2x Great-Grandparents and have tried producing the Ancestors by Generation report both by using my wife as the focus person, and then by using the 2x Great-Grandparent as the focus person. I have attempted to produce the report several times for each, mostly successfully, but on the odd occasion it hasn't worked as expected.
I guess that I will monitor the situation, and report back again should the problem keep happening.
If I find out that it's something I am doing wrong I will let you know, but I can't see what that might be.
Thanks again.
Alan

Re: Access Violation - Cannot enter marriage dates
It's most likely not related to information being added, but rather some sort of conflict, for example if you have auto save turned on it might be the actual problem is an anti-virus program or automatic backup program grabbing files which FH is trying to use.
It's always worth trying FH with the computer in safe mode to see if the error occurs then as it's a good way to determine if it's an external (to FH) factor on the computer which is causing the problem.

I have also had this error, but only on one of my computers. It usual occurs for me after using AS and saving and exiting, then switching back to FH.
I hadn't reported this because I had guessed that FH was trying to reload the file whilst AS was still trying to save.
It only happens on my older (XP) computer, which can be a bit slow at saving on occasions.
